2010 Season - Vikings rebound for split with IWU

BLOOMINGTON, Ill.—Dave Hoffman (Cary-Grove HS, Fox River Grove, Ill.) and Kurt Schmidt (Grayslake Central HS, Grayslake, Ill.) combined for nine of Augustana’s 16 hits and Jared McIntosh (Assumption HS, Davenport, Iowa) went eight innings to get his second win of the season as the Vikings rebounded from a 9-4 loss in game one to earn a doubleheader split with Illinois Wesleyan Tuesday. Augustana won the nightcap 10-3 to improve to 14-5 overall and 2-3 in the CCIW.

Game One—Illinois Wesleyan 9, Augustana 4

After being held scoreless through the first five innings, Illinois Wesleyan scored in each of its final four at-bats to post a 9-4 come-from-behind win in the first game.

Augustana starter Matt Erickson (Marmion Academy, Channahon, Ill.) coasted through the first five innings, allowing just one Titan hit and issuing a single base-on-balls. The Vikings, meanwhile, strung together a walk and a pair of singles for a run in the second and a walk and three singles for another run in the fourth to stake Erickson to a 2-0 lead.

A Mike Barker (Grandview HS, Centennial, Colo.; now resides in Marina del Rey, Calif.) hit brought home Tyler Wilson (Valparaiso HS, Valparaiso, Ind.), who had walked, with the first Viking run and Hoffman singled and scored Augustana’s second run, also on a Barker single.

Erickson started off the bottom of the sixth by retiring his twelfth straight batter, Anthony Lopez, on a called third strike. However, Brett Moore coaxed a base-on-balls to start a six-run Titan rally. Moore scored IWU’s first run on a Casey McIntosh fielder’s choice. A walk and two Viking errors led to the next three Titan runs and the final two came home on Kevin Sullivan’s double and the third Viking error of the inning. Erickson completed the inning, allowing six runs, just one of which was earned, on two hits.

Hoffman’s RBI single in the seventh drew Augustana to within 6-3, but IWU came right back in the bottom of the inning, scoring another unearned run, this one off reliever Rick Erickson (Lake Zurich HS, Hawthorn Woods, Ill.). Nick Kujawa’s (Sandburg HS, Orland Park, Ill.) solo homer in the eighth cut the lead to 7-4, but the Titans responded again with a two-run homer by Moore in the bottom of the eighth to account for the final score.

Augustana lost despite outhitting IWU 11-5. Matt Erickson took the loss, falling to 1-1 on the year. He allowed just three hits and one earned run in six innings, walking five and fanning six. Titan starter Alex Tosi went eight innings to get the win and improve to 2-3. Mark McDermott drove in four runs for IWU.

Game Two—Augustana 10, Illinois Wesleyan 3

Hoffman had five hits including his first home run of the season and Schmidt added three singles and a double as Augustana bounced back in game two. The Vikings staked freshman starter Jared McIntosh to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first on Hoffman’s RBI single through the middle. Kevin Serna (Rolling Meadows HS, Arlington Heights, Ill.) came around to score.

After Illinois Wesleyan tied the game with an unearned run in the bottom of the first, McIntosh settled in and held the Titans scoreless for the next six innings. Meanwhile, Augustana got another RBI single from Hoffman in the third and one from Schmidt in the fourth to take a 3-1 lead.

The Vikings broke the game open off Titan reliever Eric McCullough in the fifth. Kujawa led off with a double and scored two batters later on an IWU error. After McCullough walked Tyler Bernal (LaSalle-Peru HS, Peru, Ill.) to load the bases, Pat Hayn came on to face Serna, who drove in a run with a fielder’s choice. Augustana got a run on a Titan error to push the lead to 6-1. Hoffman’s RBI single drove in another and the fifth and final run of the inning scored when Schmidt was balked home.

Hoffman connected on his first homer of the year, a solo shot off Sullivan in the top of the eight, to make it 9-1 Augustana. After the Titans finally got to Jared McIntosh for a pair of runs in the bottom of the eight, the Vikings closed out the scoring with a run in the top of the ninth. Freshmen Jeremy Juhl (Glenbard East HS, Lombard, Ill.) and Nate Richardson (Smoky Hill HS, Centennial, Colo.) led off with back-to-back singles and Serna’s sacrifice fly scored Juhl to make it 10-3.

Jared McIntosh went eight innings before yielding to Tyler Willis (Lockport HS, Homer Glen, Ill.) in the ninth. He allowed just three hits and two earned runs, walking two and fanning five, to improve to 2-0 on the year. Titan starter Joe Froelich fell to 0-2 with the loss. Hoffman drove in four runs with his five hits in game two and finished the day with seven hits and five RBI.

The Vikings are back in action this weekend, hosting a doubleheader against North Park Saturday at 1:00 p.m. and a single game against the Vikings at 1:00 p.m. Sunday. All three games will be played at Swanson Stadium/Brunner Field.
