2009-2010 Season - Vikings win four events at Loras Easter Twilight

In a rare Monday competition, the Augustana Vikings won four events at the Loras Easter Twilight Invitational on April 5 at the Rock Bowl in Dubuque, Iowa. Veteran head coach Fred Whiteside’s team won both relays, the open 100 and the 3000 steeplechase. There were no team scores kept in the event.

Senior Ainsley Fedler (Burlington HS, Burlington, Iowa) sped to victory in the 100 with a time of :13.01 in the finals after running :13.23 in the preliminary round. Junior Katie Ries (Iowa City Regina HS, Iowa City, Iowa) won the 3000 steeplechase in 12:38.03 and actually led a one-two sweep of the event for the Vikings. Sophomore Sarah Johnson (Grayslake North HS, Lake Villa, Ill.) finished second with a time of 12:48.24.

The 400 relay team of junior Brittney Bennett (Annawan HS, Annawan, Ill.), sophomore Katie Bedene (Grayslake North HS, Lake Villa, Ill.), freshman Valerie Bach (Palatine HS, Palatine, Ill.) and Fedler won easily with a time of :51.34. The second place time was :52.59 turned in by St. Norbert. In the 1600 relay the unit of junior Amy Walsh (Cary Grove HS, Cary, Ill.), freshman Annie Heifner (Oregon HS, Oregon, Wis.), freshman Sarahbeth Jones (Warren Township HS, Wadswoorth, Ill.) and junior Hannah Hottle  (Monmouth-Roseville HS, Monmouth, Ill.) won in 4:07.95.

Senior Libby Geison (Bloomington HS, Bloomington, Ill.) placed second in the pole vault with a clearance of 9’ 6 ¼”. Freshman Samantha Bazely (Rock Island Alleman HS, Coal Valley, Ill.) places second in the triple jump with a leap of 31’ 7 ½”. Sophomore Catherine Foreman (St. Joseph-Ogden HS, St. Joseph, Ill.) tossed the javelin 109’ 11” and was second. Her teammate Devon White was third in the same event with a mark of 98’ 5”.

Deike was third in the 400 with a time of 1:04.89 and senior Samantha Laskowski (Reavis HS, Oak Lawn, Ill.) took fifth in 1:06.92. Hottle placed third in the 800 with a time of 2:17.40 and Jones took fourth in the 1500 in 4:59.68. Freshman Taylor Tjardes (Gibson City/Melvin/Sibley HS, Gibson City, Ill.) placed fourth in the triple jump with a leap of 29’ 7 ¼”.

Junior Kristy Klouda (West Chicago HS, Winfield, Ill.) cleared 8’ 6 ¼” in the pole vault and was fifth. Sophomore Amber Gruber (Rolling Meadows HS, Arlington Heights, Ill.) was fifth in the discus with a toss of 97’ 3”.

Augustana will participate in the Lee Calhoun Memorial Relays on the campus of Western Illinois University in Macomb, Illinois on Friday, April 9 and Saturday, April 10.
