A snapshot of the Class of 2014

Ben Humbert

Hometown: Geneva, Illinois
High School: Geneva Community
Planned major: Biochemistry

Why Augustana?

Out of the nine other colleges I was selecting from, I knew Augie would be a place where I could grow, and nothing would limit me in what I could do. I'm excited about becoming a Viking and a part of a new community.

In what activities do you plan to participate?

I plan on participating in football. After every season is over I would like to continue choir and musical production while training.

How did you spend your free time in high school?

I tried to stay as busy as possible, but when I had free time it would be spent with friends and family alike.

In what activities were you involved in high school?

I was involved in football, track and field, lacrosse, German Club, GIVE Club, Key Club, the production of Sweeney Todd and varsity choir.

What is the one thing you will make sure to bring when you move in in August?

My Geneva Vikings football tie blanket my mom made me for my 18th birthday.

Taylor Bartkowski

Hometown: Bartlett, Illinois
High School: Bartlett
Planned major: Secondary Education and English

Why Augustana?

The campus is beautiful. The people are awesome. The class sizes are small. It's not too far from home (but just far enough!), and the Education program is stellar. I could go on and on. Of the four schools I applied to, Augustana kept in contact with me the best and always wanted to make sure that my questions were answered. I have a good friend who goes to Augie, and he has so many stories of the great experiences he has had there. I can't wait to tell stories like that!

In what activities do you plan to participate?

I'd like to get involved with Intramurals, Intervarsity Christian Fellowship, Young Life, Right to Life, Augustana College Republicans, and Habitat for Humanity.

How did you spend your free time in high school?

During high school, I always kept myself busy with volunteer work, my church youth group, and sports or activities at school, and I loved it. But when all that wasn't happening, I loved to spend time with my friends, laugh with my family, and watch The Office :)

In what activities were you involved in high school?

I have been very involved in my church youth group and went on three mission trips with them so far. I sang in the Praise Band, led Bible studies and small groups, helped out during Vacation Bible School. I have done Relay for Life for five years. I participate in the Peer Leader program and wrote for my school newspaper for two years, and have also run cross country and track and field.

What is the one thing you will make sure to bring when you move in in August?

My Alfonso Soriano bobble-head ... I have to represent my Chicago Cubs in Rock Island!

Elyssa LeMay

Hometown: Peculiar, Missouri
High school: Raymore-Peculiar
Planned major: Music Performance and Theatre

Why Augustana?

I chose Augustana for many reasons. The people are wonderful, and they make me feel very welcomed, and the campus is absolutely gorgeous! However, it was the openness of the school that made me fall in love. As a young person who is still trying to discover the world and herself, I was not certain on what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. Yes, I have a plan to where I am heading, but not necessarily a plan to my destination. At Augustana, I can have the opportunity to experience new and different aspects of life and not spend great amounts of money. I look forward to my arrival and hope to meet new people along the way.

In what activities do you plan to participate?

I know for certain I will be participating in both music and theatre (which will definitely eat up all my time)!

How did you spend your free time in high school?

In high school I do not have much free time. I keep pretty busy all year round with choir, drama club, forensic tournaments, voice lessons, plays and musicals. However, in between all the chaos, I like to chill with the family and hang out with my friends. They always keep a smile on my face and support me through everything.

In what activities were you involved in high school?

I think I already answered this question... Oops! hehe :)

What is the one thing you will make sure to bring when you move in in August?

When I move in the fall, I will definitely bring boots! haha I never had to worry about the snow because we hardly get snow here and when we do, it goes away within a week or two. Well not up there! haha It will be a challenge, but it is one change I am excited for as well!

Lindsay Widdel

Hometown: Woodridge, Illinois
High school: Downers Grove South
Planned major: Business

Why Augustana?

I chose to go to Augustana because I knew it is a place where I will be more able to accomplish my goals. Also out of all of the other colleges I had visited, I felt the most welcomed here, that I had already been accepted into the Augustana family, and community between the school and student means a lot to me. In addition, I liked the atmosphere of a smaller classroom setting, I wanted more one-on-one time with my teachers in college so that when I ask questions or just want to have a discussion, I could do that with the comfort of knowing that my teacher knows who I am and what my work ethic is. Knowing these things about what Augustana had to offer me over other schools I had looked at, Augie made me feel the most at home. I knew I would be able to plant my roots here and flourish into something greater than I would ever expect. I am excited about attending next fall because I can feel that I will grow in my knowledge, friendships, and in myself.

In what activities do you plan to participate?

Like in high school, in college I'm just going to try things out. Maybe I'll enjoy playing lacrosse. I am a person who will try new things and isn't afraid to dive into them. I may play volleyball here, if not on the team, I'll play intramurals. I would like to be involved in a club at Augie that does community service as well as other leadership activities. I have done these things in high school, and I plan to continue working in my strengths.

How did you spend your free time in high school?

My free time in high school was spent at my church, at my two jobs (Hollister Co. and Hinsdale Center for the Arts) as well as my part-time job refereeing youth volleyball. Also, I was actively involved in my school clubs. In addition, I'm an artist and a very creative crafty person. I like to occupy myself with crocheting, making jewelry, taking pictures or painting. I have also taken art classes out at the Art Institute of Chicago on the weekends.

In what activities were you involved in high school?

The activities and organizations that I was involved in are choir, stage crew, NHS, volleyball, badminton, Snowball, DARE, RUSH Corps, Mad Dash, photo club, class board and Peer helpers.

What is the one thing you will make sure to bring when you move in in August?

My new door stop. It looks like a black stiletto heel! I will make sure to bring it so that fellow classmates know that I'm welcoming and excited to meet new people.

Sean Mulholland

Alexandra Rozolis

Hometown: Cary, Illinois
High School: Cary Grove High School
Planned major: Economics

Why Augustana?

Honestly? Because the people there were so friendly and welcoming. I really loved the campus and the general vibe I got from everyone there. The other schools I visited weren't nearly as enthusiastic about their school. I also felt like God was really leading me towards this school. I didn't get any acceptance letters to any other schools until I had put my deposit down at Augustana. If that isn't a sign, I don't know what is!

In what activities do you plan to participate?

Intervarsity. Potentially some intramurals. Other then that, I don't know yet, I can tell you when I get there?

How did you spend your free time in high school?

Reading and going out to eat with friends.

In what activities were you involved in high school?

Church youth group and small group. Political debate club and art. I used to dance until I broke my foot.

What is the one thing you will make sure to bring when you move in in August?

Faye Marek

Hometown: Orland Park
High school: Carl Sandburg High School

Why Augustana?

I fell in love with the atmosphere there and really enjoyed it when I came to visit. It was just that feeling that "you need to come to school here," and so I followed that feeling. :)

In what activities do you plan to participate?

A lot of the clubs! ex: Relay for life NO DOUBT, and the gardening club. I've always wanted to learn how not to kill all my plants, lol!

How did you spend your free time in high school?

Usually with my family or doing things outside and helping others. I have done a lot of community service over my four years, and I really have buckled down in school. Also, my family and I usually spend a lot of time together.

Gymnastics, tons and tons of community service, Relay for Life, and I tutor two little boys every thursday.

Jordan Fandrey

Hometown: Lemont, Illinois
High school: Lemont Township
Planned major: Biochemistry

Why Augustana?

Once I visited Augustana, I knew it was the right choice for me. The environment is so welcoming, and I feel completely comfortable there. And it's absolutely beautiful! I know my education there will be top-notch. The faculty-to-student ratio is very nice and important in my view because it's always great to have that one-on-one time with teachers. There are also so many activities to get involved in! Everyone who I have talked to so far has been extremely nice. Plus, Augie is not too far away from home, but it is just far enough. I'm so ready for it to be the fall so I can officially move in and start my education there!

In what activities do you plan to participate?

I plan on participating in the band program, although I got a music scholarship for both band and choir. I also plan on trying out for the Augie dance team and possibly ultimate frisbee?

How did you spend your free time in high school?

What free time? Haha. I am always busy, whether it's with an extracurricular activity or something pertaining to community involvement. But when I'm not doing all of that, I love spending time with my friends and family. I also love being active and being outdoors.

In what activities were you involved in high school?

I was involved in dance team, marching band, symphonic band & jazz band, choir, musical, NHS, Foreign Language Club, Athletic Council, and Community Service For Everyone. I was also involved in my church choir, my church food pantry as a volunteer and my town's Little League as both a softball player and an umpire.

What is the one thing you will make sure to bring when you move in in August?

My picture bulletin board because I always want pictures of my friends and family around me. But definitely also bringing speakers ... music and dance are basically my life. =]

Allie Denton

Hometown: Evanston, Illinois
High school: Evanston Township High School
Planned major: Biology (Pre-Vet)

Why Augustana?

There were many reasons I chose Augustana over the other schools. When looking for a school, I wanted one that didn't have a huge student population, was close to home, and not in the middle of a big city or town. When I went to interview, I fell in love with the gorgeous campus and met some great people who (at first impression) you can tell they really care about helping the students achieve in whatever they do. Another thing that really sold me on Augustana was that they have a very unique pre-vet program teamed with the University of Illinois. I also wanted to be able to continue to horseback ride and do student athletic training in college, and Augustana was the only school that offered both of those.

In what activities do you plan to participate?

I plan to be part of the equestrian team; when I went to interview I met two girls on the team and we are still in contact :) . I also plan on doing student athletic training, where I will work with the athletes to help recover from injuries. I am still deciding if I want to play in bassoon in the band or not.

How did you spend your free time in high school?
Freshman year I was lucky enough to get a job from a school project at a local vets office where I work as a veterinary assistant and that has kept me pretty busy. I also spend a lot of time at the barn where I ride and help work with the horses. When I do get a break, I spend time with my friends.

In what activities were you involved in high school?
I'm lucky enough to go to a high school with many activities. I was involved in the Marching band, where I played flute for 3 years and then conducted my senior year. I am involved in concert band where I play bassoon. I am also a student athletic trainer and a Student ambassador.

What is the one thing you will make sure to bring when you move in in August?
A collage my sister made filled with pictures of us.

Kelsey Stockert

Hometown: Peoria, Illinois
High school: Peoria Notre Dame
Planned major: Pre-med Biology

Why Augustana?

I loved the beautiful campus and the general atmosphere I got when I visited. Everyone was so warm and welcoming on campus, and I couldn't help but feel like I already belonged. No other college I visited left me with the same satisfaction I felt after being at Augustana.

In what activities do you plan to participate?

I'm planning on participating in cross country, indoor track and outdoor track.

How did you spend your free time in high school?

I like being outside, so a lot of my time was spent doing things from running, biking, roller blading and lifeguarding to slip 'n' sliding, four wheeling, rock climbing and swimming. Hanging out and relaxing with my friends was a big part of high school, too.

In what activities were you involved in high school?

I ran cross country and track all four years, was a member of Teens For Life and volunteered in my community at local day cares.

What is the one thing you will make sure to bring when you move in in August?

My pooh bear that I've had since I was a baby :)

Will Hass

Hometown: Algonquin, Illinois
High school: Marian Central Catholic
Planned major: Marketing - Communications

Why Augustana?

Augie was the second campus that I visited in 2009. In total, I went to 13 different colleges/universities. Even with all of these to choose from, I felt Augie was the best fit for me. I feel very comfortable on the campus. The curriculum seemed to fit with what I wanted to achieve in college. Of all the football programs, Augie seemed to be the most structured. The coaches really seem to care about the kids and my parents love the fact that Coach Barnes holds all of his players responsible with the Career Management binder. Last, but not least, I will get to go to Europe to play football!!!!

In what activities do you plan to participate?

I plan on participating in football.

How did you spend your free time in high school?

I spent the little free time I had hanging out with friends, watching sports, and just having fun.

In what activities were you involved in high school?

I was involved in football, wrestling, lacrosse, and power lifting.

What is the one thing you will make sure to bring when you move in in August?

A lot of Mac n' Cheese.

Nolan Code

Hometown: Naperville, Illinois
High school: Naperville Central High School
Planned major: Business

Why Augustana?

Both of my parents went to Augie, and when I visited campus, I saw that it was a good fit for me. The school's beautiful, the class sizes are perfect, and everyone seems to care about each other! I loved everything about the college, and I just felt comfortable. I can't wait to meet all my new classmates, and start a new chapter in my life!

In what activities do you plan to participate?

I'm planning on participating in Greek Life, and I was thinking about joining some intramural's and choir.

How did you spend your free time in high school?

I barely have any free time! I'm almost always busy with sports or extracurricular's. Whenever I have a half hour to spare, I work out or go outside.

In what activities were you involved in high school?

In school I participate in diving, gymnastics, and chorale. Outside of school, I'm semi-active in church and martial arts. On weekends when I don't have meets, I hang out with friends!

What is the one thing you will make sure to bring when you move in in August?

Pictures of family and friends ... I know that doesn't sound personal, but the people in my life mean the most to me! Can't wait to meet everyone!

Jessica Siverly

Hometown: Carthage, Illinois
High school: Illini West
Planned major: Studio Art

Why Augustana?

For years I have dreamed of going to New York to pursue a career in art, but, when I made a visit to Augustana, that dream changed. The people were so inviting, and the atmosphere felt like I was already home. My father is an Augie alumni, and I had heard about Augustana my whole life. At first these stories were merely stories. My time spent at Augie changed those stories into a new dream, a dream that made me choose Augustana as my future home. It doesn't get much better than that.

In what activities do you plan to participate?

I plan to wing it! I played softball and volleyball all four of my years in high school and basketball over the course of my freshman year. I would like to try some intramurals and maybe some intervarsity. Only time will tell really. I plan to be pretty involved, so I'm going to try to participate in a lot of clubs or organizations also.

How did you spend your free time in high school?

I was involved in pretty much everything. Thus, if I actually had free time I spent it relaxing with my family and/or my friends. We spent a lot of money at the movie theater, mall, and restaurants.

In what activities were you involved in high school?

Student Council, FBLA, Art Club, Drama Club, International Club, S.A.D.D., NHS, Basketball, Volleyball, Softball, Key Club, History Club, Math team, and I also work at Subway. My job title: Sandwich artist. :) On the weekends I lead our church's Children's Church and am a member of the youth group.

What is the one thing you will be sure to bring when you move into Augustana?

An alarm clock. I have serious oversleeping issues!

Claire Krieger

Hometown: Mokena, Illinois
High school: Lincoln Way East High School
Planned major: Business

Why Augustana?

I knew once i set foot on the campus that it was the right school for me. I just got this feeling and decided after the tour that I was going here. Augustana has a gorgeous campus I love how it feels like a big campus yet small at the same time. The classes are not too big and I can get to know my professors. At Augustana I feel like I actually matter and not just another student.

In what activities do you plan to participate?

I plan on doing intramural soccer and I hope to study abroad as well as some internships.

How did you spend your free time in high school?

Destany Metcalf

Hometown: Rochelle, Illinois
High school: Rochelle Township High School
Planned major: Mathematics

Why Augustana?

Augie stuck out the most when I searched for which college to go to. I love how it's sort of far from home, but close enough in case of any emergency. I fell in love when I visited too! One of the things I like the most is how everything is spread out, but there's not a ton of people. I'd rather make deeper connections with people versus go to a bigger school and just have a lot of acquaintances.

In what activities do you plan to participate?

I plan to participate in some sort of choir. Also, if there's a vocal jazz/a'capella group I'd love to join. I would also like to be involved in religious organizations (weekly bible study, small groups, prayer groups?). Lastly, I'd like to just do fun activities that involve bonding with others:)

How did you spend your free time in high school?

I spent time in various clubs. I also took a lot of time studying and practicing my music.

In what activities were you involved in high school?

I was in vocal jazz, my school's top choir, and I helped with another choir. That right there took up a lot of extra time. I was also a Natural Helper, International Club executive board member. I stayed activiely involved in morning prayer group and National Honors Society as well.

What is the one thing you will make sure to bring when you move in in August?

My phone charger. Haha, I'm just kidding. I will have to be sure to bring photos of my friends and family with me to hang on a wall or board.

Chloe Hall

Hometown: Rock Island, Illinois (currently in Moline)
High school: Rivermont Collegiate
Planned major: Creative writing and Theatre

Why Augustana?

Having spent time on campus with friends, I knew it was beautiful. Then, when I visited, I fell in love with it in a way. It was the first school I visited where I thought "I can live here." It's also comforting to know my way around the Quad Cities from living in the area my whole life.

In what activities do you plan to participate?

Theatre, for sure. I'm into doing intramurals. Other than that, I'll just have to see what draws me.

How did you spend your free time in high school?

I spent, and still do spend, time reading and writing. When I wasn't secluding myself from humanity (ha-ha), I, like most socially apt children, hung out with friends. In the summer I put a lot of my time into the Niabi volunteering as a Junior Zookeeper.

In what activities were you involved in high school?

I was a part of Student Council as president and then general mastermind of event planning (aka Spirit Chair). Other than that, I played volleyball, and was on the cheerleading squad from 8th grade on. My biggest thing was theatre (imagine that!), that's where most of my time went.

What is the one thing you will make sure to bring when you move in in August?

Aside form the necessary and the somewhat frivolous, I will be bringing Goldie my stuffed goldfish puppet. And no, I'm not ashamed.

Amber Doherty

Hometown: Oak Lawn, Illinois
High school: Mother McAuley Liberal Arts High School
Planned major: Chemistry and Studio Art

Why Augustana?

I went to the largest all girls high school in the country and getting to know people was more difficult then I expected, so I knew that I wanted a college with small class sizes. The beautiful campus, nice people, and amazing academics were just a plus. When I went to visit, it just seemed like the perfect fit!

In what activities do you plan to participate?

I plan on seeing what catches my eye, but I definitely want to get involved in Habitat For Humanity.

How did you spend your free time in high school?

Like most people, I spent a lot of time just hanging out with my friends, but I also spent a lot of my free time volunteering and being involved with my church's youth group.

In what activities were you involved in high school?

I was involved in National Art Honor Society, my church's youth group, with which I went on a mission trip to a Native American reservation in Montana last year and am going to Texas this summer, and am the co-chair of education on a leadership council.

What is the one thing you will make sure to bring when you move in in August?

Besides my basic necessities (the seasons of It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia), I plan on bringing my teddy bear from England!

Ashleigh Hresan

Hometown: Shorewood, Illinois
High school: Providence Catholic High School
Planned major: Biology (Pre-Vet), Theatre

Why Augustana?

It's funny, because when I began my college search my mom kept buggering me to visit Augie and of course, on precedence, I vehemently refused. I could pick out my own college thankyouverymuch. As we progressed in the search, visiting schools that were too big, too small, too deep in the city, too far out in the cornfields, et cetera, I finally broke down and visited Augustana. I continued searching after that, (I'd only visited it to appease my darling mother) but somehow Augie kept worming its way into my thoughts. I gave in and realized I really DID like it (and I never heard the end of it from my mom). It just felt right, like it was a place I could feel comfortable calling home for the next four years. It was beautiful, just the right size, and just the right distance. It had everything I needed and wanted: a great pre-vet program, a good theatre program, and an equestrian team.

In what activities do you plan to participate?

I plan on being a part of the equestrian team and the theatre productions.

How did you spend your free time in high school?

In high school I divided my time between school, horses, and theatre. I worked (and still work) for Sunrise Center North's Therapeutic Riding program as a lesson volunteer and as a media coordinator (and I plan to continue my work there through college). I help with lessons, care for the horses, help plan fundraisers, etc. I also ride (both English and Western). All of that has kept me pretty busy. If I wasn't in the saddle or at rehearsal, you could probably catch me at Arlington Park Racetrack (or Hawthorne Racecourse, depending on the season).

In what activities were you involved in high school?

I went through a phase in high school (around sophomore year) where I couldn't seem to make up my mind - it was hard to find a club I wasn't a part of then. Thankfully, though, I got a little more decisive as time went by. I was mostly a part of the theatre (I've been a part of every fall play, one act, and spring musical my school has put on in my four years there as an actor, props mistress, or stage manager).

What is the one thing you will make sure to bring when you move in in August?

Well, I'm a big fan of toast, so a toaster, if I've got room for it. And my books! I don't know how I'm going to be able to pick and choose which ones to bring! (I suppose I could just kick the roomie out to make room for them...). That's two, but oh well ;]

James Stratton

Hometown: Sherrard, Illinois
High school: Sherrard High School
Planned major: Multimedia Journalism Mass communications

Why Augustana?

It's my college. It's cheesy to say that I knew it when I stepped foot on campus, but its true! It's a place where I know I'll be able to grow as a student, athlete and an individual. I'm stoked to become a Viking!

In what activities do you plan to participate?

I plan on playing football. I might do track and field as well. I'd also like to get into as many clubs as possible.

How did you spend your free time in high school?

There wasn't much of that for me in high school. But when I had some I like to chill with friends. I'm also pretty big into skiing (water and snow).

In what activities were you involved in high school?

Football, track, band, jazz band, NHS, pep club, and varsity club.

What is the one thing you will make sure to bring when you move in in August?

Myself? Kidding ... on a more serious note, a lot of Ramen noodles, and a pair of skis.

Michael Carlyle

Hometown: Belvidere, Illinois
High School: Belvidere High School
Planned Major: Undecided! :D

Why Augustana?

It all came down to feel. While Augustana and the other main school I considered were similar on paper, in reality they were quite different. Probably the deciding factor was faculty -- between my honors interview with Dr. Egan, my e-mail correspondence with Ms. Bourlet, and sitting in on classes during Experience Augustana, everyone was just great and so friendly. Oh! And not to forget Mrs. Lambrecht, whom I favored much more than the oboe teacher at the other school I was looking at. Everyone seemed to show a genuine interest in having me on campus next fall. Clichély (is that an adverb?), I feel at home at Augie, and it helps that the campus is gorgeous.

In what activities do you plan to participate?

Currently, I only plan on playing in a band (here's hoping for symphonic! -fingers crossed-) and maybe orchestra, if I have nothing better to do with myself. Beyond band/orchestra and lessons, I'm not sure; I'll likely just try different things out.

How did you spend your free time in high school?

I was going to answer "What free time?", but someone else already did that. :( Almost every night I had some music-involved activity. I played in the Rockford Youth Symphony Orchestra, my school's symphonic and jazz bands, and the local community college's concert band and chamber orchestra, as well as the occasional oddity, like playing for musicals for Belvidere North HS. When I wasn't in a rehearsal, I was likely either doing homework, texting my friends, or in a lesson. All in all, I did quite a lot, but it kept me busy and from boredom.

In what activities were you involved in high school?

As I mentioned, I played oboe in the symphonic band and was lead alto saxophone in the jazz ensemble, and during marching season, I led the marching Bucs as one of two drum majors. I was also a National Honor Society, German club, and AFS member. With NHS I participated in Relay for Life; I also tutored freshmen two days a week.

What is the one thing you will make sure to bring when you move in in August?

I'll likely have to purchase a TI-89...that aside, I'll obviously have to bring my MacBook Pro. And I'll be bringing a personal item someone gave me, but to explain here would be both lame and corny. :)
