2009-2010 Season - Zeunik erases oldest school record on books

Junior Patrick Zeunik (Bloomington Central Catholic HS, Bloomington, Ill.) took down the oldest school record on the books to help lead Augustana to a second place finish at the Wartburg Select Invitational on Friday, May 2 in Waverly, Iowa. Zeunik, who earned All-American honors in the NCAA Division III Indoor Championship just three weeks earlier, won the triple jump with a leap of 48’ 2”. That performance took down the name of Geoff Smithers from the Vikings record book. Smithers held the standard with a mark of 48’ 0 ¼” set in 1968.

Not only did Zeunik set a new school record, he also qualified for the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field Championships with his jump. He was one of three Augustana athletes to win individual events in the meet as Paul Olsen’s Vikings scored 173 points to place second in the eight team meet. Iowa Central won the team title with 189 points. Wisconsin-LaCrosse was third with 157 points and Wisconsin-Platteville took second with 81. Wartburg (57), Simpson (32), Dubuque (24) and Grandview (19) rounded out the field. Joining Zeunik on the victory stand were senior Darin Decker (Moline HS, Moline, Ill.) in the hammer throw and junior Matt Bowman (Geneva HS, Geneva, Ill.) in the 5000. Bowman won the 5,000 with a time of 15:20.95 and Decker tossed the hammer 166’ 4”.

The Vikings placed second in five events and the only event in which they didn’t place somebody in the top five was the 1500. Senior Jeff Lackaff (Downers Grove North HS, Downers Grove, Ill.) finished second in the javelin with a toss of 175’ 0”. Sophomore Phil Christensen (Kaneland HS, Maple Park, Ill.) was the runner-up in the discus with a throw of 155’ 10”. Junior Eric Chalus (Rochelle HS, Rochelle, Ill.) cleared 14’ 11” to take second in the pole vault. Senior Alex Stake (Williamsville HS, Sherman, Ill.) was part of a two-three team finish in the long jump as he recorded a leap of 21’ 1 ½” and Zeunik finished third with a mark of 20 11 ¼”. The 1600 relay team of Greg Davis (Carlinville HS, Carlinville, Ill.), Greg Patton (Bloomington HS, Bloomington, Ill.), Daniel Doubet (Galesburg HS, Galesburg, Ill.) and James Wood (St. Charles North HS, St. Charles, Ill.) finished second with a time of 3:18.35.

Senior Max Petersen (Mundelein HS, Mundelein, Ill.) sped to a third place finish of :10.85 in the 100. Patton finished third in the 400 in :49.23. The 800 saw the Vikings take third and fourth with freshman Steve Rogers (Crystal Lake South HS, Crystal Lake, Ill.) finishing third in 1:57.38 and junior Jason Langslet Mundelein HS, Mundelein, Ill.) taking fourth in 1:58.08. Davis was third in the 400 intermediate hurdles in :56.70 and fourth in the 110 high hurdles at :15.39. Junior Patrick Hoefle (Lena-Winslow HS, Lena, Ill.) tossed the discus 146’ 7” to finish third.  Sophomore Adam Myers (Dixon HS, Dixon, Ill.) placed third in the hammer with a heave of 153’ 1”. The 400 meter relay team of Petersen, Patton, Alex Rindone (Marmion Academy, Geneva, Ill.) and Wood sped to a third place finish with a time of :42.12.
