2010 Season - 11th ranked Vikings open CCIW with sweep
It was a perfect way to open the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin softball campaign for the 11th ranked Augustana Vikings. Veteran head coach Kris Kistler’s team swept a double header on Thursday, April 1 at Wheaton, beating the Thunder 9-2 in the first game and 8-4 in the nightcap. The Augustana offense banged out 25 hits in the two games and a total of four pitchers kept the Wheaton offense at bay as the Vikings ran their winning streak to eight straight and upped their record to 16-5 overall. Wheaton fell to 13-9 and 0-2.
GAME #1 – Augustana 9, Wheaton 2
Augustana clubbed 13 hits and had two three run innings en route to a 9-2 victory over Wheaton in the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin opener for both teams. The Vikings jumped out to a 3-0 lead with three runs in the top of the first inning. Stephanie Sarb (Lisle HS, Lisle, Ill.) singled in Dawn Kernich (Mt. Olive HS, Mt. Olive, Ill.) with the first run and then Jessica Peterson (Marian Catholic HS, Lansing, Ill.) doubled in two more.
Sheldon Ritzheimer (Trenton-Wesclin HS, Trenton, Ill.) was the starting pitcher for Augustana and she gave up a pair of runs in the bottom of the first on a two run home run by Wheaton shortstop Lauren Griffith. Those would be the only runs of the game for the Thunder. Ritzheimer settled down and worked five innings and gave up four hits while striking out three. She moved her record to 8-2 with the victory.
In the top of the third Brittany Snoreck (Carl Sandburg HS, Orland Park, Ill.) singled in one run and then Missy Fobert (Rock Island Alleman HS, Rock Island, Ill.) doubled home two more. Fobert would end the game with three hits in four at-bats, scoring one run and driving in three.
Chrissy Rosin (Niles West HS, Morton Grove, Ill.) homered to lead off the sixth and Karlee Quaritsch (Palatine HS, Palatine, Ill.) and Melissa Nelson (West Aurora HS, Aurora, Ill.) followed with back-to-back doubles to make the score 8-2. Fobert ended the scoring for the Vikings when she homered to left with two outs in the top of the seventh.
Kelli Humbert (Dwight HS, Dwight, Ill.) worked the final two innings to preserve the victory. Fobert led the offense with three hits while Quaritsch and Peterson had two apiece.
GAME #2 – Augustana 8, Wheaton 4
The Vikings got busy early in game two, scoring four runs in each of the first two innings to jump out to an 8-1 lead. Eventually the game would end 8-4 in Augustana’s favor.
Senior Jackie Gill (Heyworth HS, Heyworth, Ill.) picked up the victory as the starter and moved to 4-2 on the season. She worked four innings, struck out two and gave up six runs.
In the bottom of the first inning Melissa Nelson (West Aurora HS, Aurora, Ill.) singled home Dawn Kernich (Mt. Olive HS, Mt. Olive, Ill.) with two outs for the first run. Stephanie Sarb (Lisle HS, Lisle, Ill.) followed with a single to bring home Nelson. After Jessica Peterson (Marian Catholic HS, Lansing, Ill.) singled Sarb to second, Christina Trojanowski tripled to right field to chase home Sarb and Peterson and make it 4-0.
Wheaton touched Gill for an unearned run in the top of the second but the Vikings put four more up in the bottom of the inning. Karlee Quaritsch (Palatine HS, Palatine, Ill.) drove home two with a single to center with one out and Sarb drove in a run with single to right. Peterson’s suicide squeeze brought Quaritsch in with the fourth run of the inning and the final tally of the game for Augustana.
The Thunder scored single runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings but it was not enough.
Nelson had four hits, two runs scored and an RBI to lead the Augustana offense. Kernich and Sarb each had two hits.
