2010 Season - Nelson named "Hitter of the Week" in CCIW
Junior leftfielder Melissa Nelson (West Aurora HS, Aurora, Ill.) of Augustana has been selected as the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin “Hitter of the Week” for the week ending March 28, it was announced today. Nelson played a huge role in the Vikings’ going 6-0 during the last week’s competition, including winning the championship of the Augustana Invitational.
Nelson hit .412 with seven hits in 17 at-bats to go along with five runs scored and nine runs-batted-in. She had a double, a home run and one sacrifice fly.
She collected two hits and scored two runs in an 8-0 win over Wisconsin-Platteville in the first game of an eventual double header sweep on Wednesday, March 24. She also had two hits in an 11-3 victory over Wittenberg on March 28 in the Augustana Invitational. Also in the Augustana Invitational, she hit a two run home run in the top of the ninth inning of a 5-2 win over Northland.
So far this season Nelson is the leading hitter for head coach Kris Kistler’s Vikings, who are currently 14-5 overall and ranked 10th in NCAA Division III. Nelson is batting .410 with 25 hits in 61 at-bats while scoring 18 runs with five doubles, two triples, four home runs and 23 runs-batted-in. She has two walks, one stolen base, one sacrifice fly and one sacrifice hit.
Nelson was a second team all-conference performer in the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin as a freshman in 2008. A Sociology major, she is the daughter of Scott and Angie Nelson of Aurora, Illinois.
