2009-2010 Season - Patton & Christensen win CCIW track recognition
For the second consecutive week Augustana swept the “Athletes of the Week” awards for men’s track & field in the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin following the second weekend of competition in the 2010 outdoor season. Sophomore Phil Christensen (Kaneland HS, Maple Park, Ill.) won the honor for field events for the second straight week while freshman sprinter Greg Patton (Bloomington HS, Bloomington, Ill.) won the track events portion of the award. Both athletes were instrumental in the Vikings winning the 69th annual Viking Olympics, which were held on March 26-27 at Paul V. Olsen Track/Ericson Field.
Christensen won the discus with a new Augustana school record of 171’ 11”, which broke his own mark of 170’ 8” set last year. His throw automatically qualifies him for the NCAA Division III national outdoor championship and is currently the top throw in the nation.
Patton won the 400 with a time of :49.02 and handled the second leg on two winning relay teams. The 400 meter relay unit clocked a time of :42.25 and 1600 meter team went 3:20.29.
Augustana captured the 10 team meet with a total of 362 points.
Christensen, the son of Laurie Christensen of Maple Park, Illinois, is a computer science major while Patton, the son of Greg and Eunice Patton of Bloomington, Illinois, is a political science and geography major.
