2010 Season - 10th ranked Vikings win Augustana Invitational

A tremendous pitching performance from Sheldon Ritzheimer (Trenton Wesclin HS, Trenton, Ill.), great defense and some timely hitting added up to a championship performance on Sunday for Augustana. The Vikings won the championship of the Augustana Invitational with a 2-1 victory over Wisconsin-River Falls in a matchup of two teams that came into the final game undefeated with perfect 3-0 records.

Ritzheimer went 6 1/3 innings and scattered seven hits while striking out three as she moved to 7-1 on the season. She gave way to Kelli Humbert (Dwight HS, Dwight, Ill.) with one out in the top of the seventh inning after giving up a solo home run to Falcon pinch hitter Sarah Fern. Humbert allowed two hits but no runs as she picked up her second save of the season.

The game was scoreless in the bottom of the fifth when Brittany Snoreck (Carl Sandburg HS, Orland Park, Ill.) lined the second of her two doubles in the game down the left field line with one out. She gave way to pinch runner Abbi Staples (Sterling HS, Sterling, Ill.). Missy Fobert (Rock Island Alleman HS, Rock Island, Ill.) singled to center field to score Staples with the game’s first run.

In the sixth the Vikings added a second run when Melissa Nelson (West Aurora HS, Aurora, Ill.) singled to lead things off. She went to second on a sacrifice by Stephanie Sarb (Lisle HS, Lisle, Ill.) and third on a ground out. She came home when Christina Trojanowski (Evergreen Park HS, Evergreen Park, Ill.) singled off the pitcher’s leg.

With the win Augustana, ranked 10th in NCAA Division III, has now won six games in a row and moved its overall record to 14-5.
