2009-2010 Season - School records highlight Viking Olympics
ROCK ISLAND, Ill.—A pair of Augustana school records fell Saturday on the second day of the Viking Olympics at Paul V. Olsen Track/Ericson Field. Sophomore discus thrower Phil Christensen (Kaneland HS, Maple Park, Ill.) and the Viking 4x200 relay team etched their names in the record book and helped Augustana tally 362 points, easily outdistancing the rest of the 10-team field. Monmouth finished second with 143 points.
The 4x200 relay team of James Wood (St. Charles North HS, St. Charles, Ill.), Alex Rindone (Marmion Academy, Geneva, Ill.), Max Petersen (Mundelein HS, Mundelein, Ill.) and Nick Borchert (Ankeny HS, Ankeny, Iowa) won the event with a time of 1:28.02. Christensen won the discus with an NCAA-qualifying throw of 172’ 11”.
The record-setters were far from the only bright spots for the hosts on Saturday. Senior Nate Maass (Naperville Central HS, Naperville, Ill.) finished what he started on Friday, winning the decathlon with 5,435 points. Maass won six of the 10 individual events. Teammate Matt Deets (Polo HS, Polo, Ill.) was second with 4,756 points and another Viking, David Zeko (Somonauk HS, Sheridan, Ill.) finished fourth with 4,172.
Other winners for Augustana on Saturday included Chris Zook’s (Community HS, Normal, Ill.) 15:27.68 in the 5000, Greg Davis’ (Carlinville HS, Carlinville, Ill.) :55.92 in the 400 hurdles and Greg Patton’s (Bloomington HS, Bloomington, Ill.) :49.03 at 400 meters. The Vikings also picked up wins by the 4x400 team of Davis, Patton, Wood and Borchert (3:20.29) as well as the 4x100 (:42.25) relay team.
In the 1500, Mike Tisza (Hersey HS, Prospect Heights, Ill.) took second place with a 4:03.16. Matt Bowman (Geneva HS, Elburn, Ill.) was fourth in 4:04.85, Brian Hart (University City, St. Louis, Mo.) fifth in 4:05.23, Dan Bailey (Deerfield HS, Deerfield, Ill.) sixth in 4:05.40 and Sean Carmody (Winnebago HS, Rockford, Ill.) ran a 4:08.24 for seventh place.
Freshman Joseph Zahn (Moline HS, Moline, Ill.) captured a second-place finish at 800 meters with a time of 1:57.85 while Greg Weigand (Wheaton Warrenville South HS, Wheaton, Ill.) and Jason Langslet (Mundelein HS, Mundelein, Ill.) were third and fourth, respectively in 1:58.27 and 1:58.57. Steve Rogers (Crystal Lake South HS, Crystal Lake, Ill.) (1:59.47) and Kris Hinchley (York KS, Elmhurst, Ill.) (2:00.18) took sixth and seventh.
Pat Hoefle (Lena-Winslow HS, Lena, Ill.) was third in the discus with a heave of 154’ 2”. Tom Ries (Regina HS, Iowa City, Iowa) also nailed down a third-place finish with a 15:39.26 in the 5000. Brandon Gittelman (Naperville Central HS, Naperville, Ill.) was sixth in 15:55.71 and Nick Danzy (Naperville Central HS, Naperville, Ill.) seventh with a 16:03.79.
In the 110 hurdles, Davis ran a :15.52 to take fourth place. Brendan Bradley (Mundelein HS, Mundelein, Ill.) was sixth and Pat Callan (Libertyville HS, Libertyville, Ill.) seventh with times of :15.86 and :15.99, respectively. Bradley (:57.99) and Callan (:59.20) also finished fourth and sixth in the 400 hurdles. Ryan Brummet (Riverdale HS, Port Byron, Ill.) ran a :51.15 in the 400 to take fourth place.
The Vikings took places four through six in the long jump. Pat Zeunik’s (Bloomington Central Catholic HS, Bloomington, Ill.) 21’ 5½” was good for fourth, followed by Mike Tovar’s (Mooseheart HS, Chicago, Ill.) 21’ 5 ¼” and Brett Becker’s (Cuba City HS, Cuba City, Wis.) 21’ 0”. Tim Whisler (Maine West HS, Des Plaines, Ill.) put the shot 47’ ¾” to finish sixth.
Augustana will next be in competition at the Wartburg select in Waverly, Iowa on Friday, April 2 at 12:00 noon.
