2009-2010 Season - Weigand, Henry lead way at Prairie Fire
Led by the individual top 20 performances of Kyle Weigand (Leyden HS, Franklin Park, Ill.) and Jordan Henry (Erie HS, Erie, Ill.), Augustana placed fifth in the 16 team Prairie Fire Invitational in Galesburg, Illinois on March 26 and 27. It was the first tournament of the spring season for head coach Grey Giovanine’s club and it was held at the par 72 Soangetaha golf course.
Weigand and Henry were both very consistent throughout the two day tournament. Weigand shot 76 on Friday and came back with a 79 on Saturday for a 36 hole total of 155. He placed 13th in the individual standings. Henry had a 78 on Friday and followed that with a 79 on Saturday, which gave him a 157 for the tournament and left him in 19th place.
Sean McNamara of Monmouth won the individual title with a two day score of 150 after shooting 74 on Friday and 76 on Saturday.
As a team the Vikings shot a 638 with a score of 322 on Friday followed by a 316 on Saturday. That gave them a fifth place in the team standings. Monmouth won the event with an impressive 609 score while Wheaton was second at 616 and Carroll placed third at 617. Iowa Wesleyan took fourth with 630 and Augustana was eight shots back in fifth. Knox placed sixth with a score of 640 and Illinois College (646), Monmouth #2 (646), Dubuque (656) and Coe (668) rounded out the top 10.
Jeff Paustian (Geneva HS, Geneva, Ill.) finished 29th individually with a score of 162. He shot 85 on Friday but came back on Saturday to record a 77. Greg Karesh (Downers Grove South HS, Downers Grove, Ill.) shot 164 with rounds of 83 and 81 and Phil Litchfield (Benet Academy, Darien, Ill.) recorded a score of 168 (85 & 83).
Augustana’s next action will be on April 2-3 at the Illinois Wesleyan Invitational at Ironwood Golf Course in Bloomington, Illinois.
