2010 Season - Peters big effort helps Vikings improve to 12-0
MOLINE, Ill. – John Peters (Alleman HS, Milan, Ill.) came on in relief in the first inning and gave Augustana 6 2/3 strong innings Wednesday night as the Vikings defeated Monmouth 7-5 at Swanson Stadium/Brunner Field. With the win, the 11th-ranked Vikings improve to 12-0 on the year, while Monmouth falls to 2-10.
Viking starter Mike Pagano (Notre Dame HS, Chicago, Ill.) ran into trouble early, walking Scot leadoff hitter Caleb Ruyle and then allowing back-to-back singles. Stephen Underwood’s sacrifice fly and an RBI ground by Ross Donnan put Monmouth up 2-0 and after Pagano gave up another base hit and walk, Peters came on in relief. Peters walked Randy Weidner to force in another run, but pitched out of further trouble in the inning.
Augustana got one of those runs back in the bottom of the first. Dave Hoffman (Cary-Grove HS, Fox River Grove, Ill.) drew a two-out walk and eventually came around on a T.J. O’Donnell (New Trier HS, Northbrook, Ill.) single to left.
Hoffman’s lead-off single in the third started a two-run rally that tied the game. He advanced to third on Tyler Wilson’s (Valparaiso HS, Valparaiso, Ind.) double to left and scored on Nick Kujawa’s (Sandburg HS, Orland Park, Ill.) ground out. Wilson scored the second run on a Monmouth passed ball.
Monmouth retook the lead in the fourth, getting their only run off Peters. Two singles and a walk started the inning, but the Viking reliever was able to extricate himself, allowing only an RBI groundout.
A pair of Monmouth errors opened the door for a three-run Viking outburst in the fifth. Mike Barker’s (Grandview HS, Centennial, Colo.; now resides in Marina Del Ray, Calif.) two-run double to left center was the big hit, driving in Jared McIntosh (Assumption HS, Davenport, Iowa) and Joe Moran (Notre Dame HS, Chicago, Ill.).
The Viking extended the lead to 7-4 with a run in the sixth. Again, it was Hoffman starting things with a leadoff single. Wilson followed by reaching on one of six Monmouth errors in the game. After yet another Scot error loaded the bases, Hoffman came home on Moran’s fielder’s choice.
Meanwhile, Peters was cruising, lasting until one out in the eighth inning before loading the bases and giving way to Vince Frede (St. Charles East HS, St. Charles, Ill.). Frede got a strikeout and a pop out to get Augustana out of the inning unscored upon and started the ninth by getting the first two Scot hitters as well. However back-to-back doubles by Chaz Baggio and Terry Davis cut the Augustana lead to 7-5. Closer Joe Ufheil (Notre Dame HS, Chicago, Ill.) came on in relief of Frede and despite giving up a pair of walks, was able to close things out for his sixth save of the season.
Peters scattered seven hits and four walks in his 6 2/3 innings to pick up the win and improve to 2-0 on the season. Larry Milstead took the loss for the Scots. Hoffman paced the Viking offense with three hits and three runs scored.
Now 12-0 on the season and ranked 11th in the latest D3Baseball.com poll, Augustana comes right back on Thursday, March 25, hosting Aurora at Swanson Stadium/Brunner Field at 6:00 p.m.
