2010 Season - Sarb's bat and solid pitching key sweep

Combining solid pitching and the hot bat of junior Stephanie Sarb (Lisle HS, Lisle, Ill.), the Augustana Vikings swept a non-conference doubleheader from Wisconsin-Platteville on Wednesday, March 24. The Vikings won game one by a score of 8-0 and then picked up a 3-0 victory in the night cap. With the two wins, head coach Kris Kistler’s team moved to 10-5 on the season.

GAME #1 – Big third inning keys shutout victory over Pioneers

Junior third baseman Stephanie Sarb (Lisle HS, Lisle, Ill.) blasted a three run home run to key a five run outburst in the bottom of the third inning as Augustana defeated Wisconsin-Platteville 8-0 in the first game of a non-conference double header. Sarb wasn’t the only Viking to play long ball as senior catcher Karlee Quaritsch (Palatine HS, Palatine, Ill.) hit a two run homer in the bottom of the fourth. The game was shortened to just five innings due to the eight run rule.

Junior Sheldon Ritzheimer (Trenton-Wesclin HS, Trenton, Ill.) picked up the victory as she went four innings and gave up just one hit and no runs. Junior Rachel Perry (Chillicothe IVC HS, Chillicothe, Ill.) worked the top of the fifth and closed out the shutout.

The Vikings got on the board in the bottom of the second inning when junior Melissa Nelson (West Aurora HS, Aurora, Ill.) singled with one out. After Sarb flew out for the second out of the inning, sophomore Christina Trojanowski (Evergreen Park HS, Evergreen Park, Ill.) singled to left to move Nelson to second base. Nelson came home on a single to center field by freshman second baseman Jessica Peterson (Marian Catholic HS, Lansing, Ill.). That made it 1-0.

In the third Augustana loaded the bases with one out and Nelson delivered a two run single to make it 3-0 and then Sarb’s blast soared over the left field fence to push the advantage to 6-0. Quaritsch hit a two run homer in the fourth to make it 8-0.

GAME #1 – Erica Aten and Kelli Humbert combine on three hit shutout to complete sweep of UW-Platteville

Sophomore Erica Aten (Moline HS, Moline, Ill.) and junior Kelli Humbert (Dwight HS, Dwight, Ill.) combined for a three hit shutout as Augustana completed a sweep of Wisconsin-Platteville with a 3-0 victory. Aten worked five innings and struck out three and allowed three hits and three walks while moving her record to 2-0 on the year. Humbert worked two innings and struck out three without allowing a hit. She picked up her first save of the season.

Augustana scored single runs in the second, fifth and sixth innings. In the second Sarb hammered her sixth home run of the season to make it 1-0. In the fifth Aten reached on an error to lead off and gave way to sophomore pinch runner Abbi Staples (Sterling HS, Sterling, Ill.). Staples eventually scored on a ground out off the bat of senior shortstop Chrissy Rosin (Niles West HS, Morton Grove, Ill.).

The final run came in the sixth when pinch runner Mallory Huml (Kaneland HS, Elburn, Ill.), in for Brittany Snoreck (Carl Sandburg HS, Orland Park, Ill.), who had walked, came home on Sarb’s two out double to center field.
