2010 Season - 18th-ranked Vikings win 11th straight
WINTER HAVEN, Florida—The 18th-ranked Augustana baseball team continued its winning ways Sunday morning, jumping out to a 7-1 lead over Wisconsin-Stout and hanging on for a 7-6 win. The victory keeps the Vikings unbeaten on the season at 11-0.
Freshman first baseman Nick Kujawa’s (Sandburg HS, Orland Park, Ill.) two-run single keyed a four-run first inning for the Vikings. They also got a sacrifice fly from Mike Lamb (Ottawa HS, Ottawa, Ill.) and an RBI single from Joe Moran (Notre Dame HS, Chicago, Ill.) in the frame.
Kujawa drove in another run with a double in the top of the third. Meanwhile, Viking starter Mike Trotta (Notre Dame HS, Chicago, Ill.) cruised through the first two innings before running into trouble in the third. The Blue Devils managed a run but Trotta pitched out of any further trouble, leaving the bases loaded.
Moran’s leadoff single in the top of the fourth sparked a two-run inning that pushed the lead to 7-1. Kevin Serna’s (Rolling Meadows HS, Arlington Heights, Ill.) sacrifice fly to right field scored Moran and Kurt Schmidt’s (Grayslake Central HS, Grayslake, Ill.) RBI single to right brought in Jarl Dahlgren (Auburn HS, Rockford, Ill.), who had been hit by a pitch.
Brian Giebel touched Trotta for a two-run single in the bottom of the fourth to make the score 7-3 and the Blue Devils added another pair of runs in the fifth of Viking reliever Kevin Kulig (Benet Academy, Lemont, Ill.). Josh Anderson’s solo home run to left center off Josiah Martin (Canton HS, Canton, Ill.) in the seventh cut the Augustana advantage to 7-6.
Meanwhile, Stout’s Aaron Paisar, who had come on in relief of starter Chris Lammert to start the fifth, was shutting down the Viking attack. Paisar allowed just two singles while fanning five in four innings of work.
Martin finished a solid three-inning outing by setting the Blue Devils down in the eighth before yielding to closer Joe Ufheil (Notre Dame HS, Chicago, Ill.) in the ninth. The sophomore right-hander didn’t disappoint, retiring Stout to earn his fourth save of the season.
Martin, another sophomore, earned the win to improve to 3-0 on the year. Lammert, who allowed seven runs in four innings, took the loss. Kujawa’s three RBI paced the Augustana offense, while Schmidt, a freshman shortstop, went 4-for-5 and junior third baseman Dave Hoffman (Cary-Grove HS, Fox River Grove, Ill.) went 3-for-5 and scored twice.
The Vikings will host Monmouth in a 5:00 p.m. contest at Swanson Stadium/Brunner Field on Wednesday, March 24.
