2010 Season - Central's 7-run fifth dooms Vikings

ST. LOUIS, Mo. – Trailing 4-0 heading into the top of the fifth inning, the Central Dutch hit Augustana with a seven spot and went on to post an 8-5 win Saturday morning. The 8th-ranked Vikings dropped their second in a row, falling to 8-4 on the season.

The game was scoreless for three and a half innings before Augustana touched Dutch starter Kiley Lythberg for four runs in the bottom of the fourth. Melissa Nelson’s (West Aurora HS, Aurora, Ill.) one-out, solo home run to right center got things started. It was Nelson’s third round-tripper of the season. After singles by Stephanie Sarb (Lisle HS, Lisle, Ill.) and Jessica Peterson (Marian Catholic HS, Lansing, Ill.), Missy Fobert connected on her second homer of the season—a three-run blast to center—to give Vikings a 4-0 lead.

The lead didn’t last long however, as Central got to Augustana starter Sheldon Ritzheimer (Wesclin HS, Trenton, Ill.) in the top of the fifth. Ritzheimer, who was coming off a one-hit shutout of Washington University on Friday, was rocked for seven runs before giving way to reliever Rachel Perry (Illinois Valley Central HS, Chillicothe, Ill.). The big hits in the inning were a two-run single by Angela Davis and Caitlyn Meyer’s three-run homer to left.

Katie Tenboer’s RBI double in the top of the sixth made it 8-4 Central before Augustana responded with a run in the bottom of the frame when Christina Trojanowski (Evergreen Park HS, Evergreen Park, Ill.) and Fobert each doubled to left. However, that was as close as the Vikings would get as Lythberg retired them quietly in the seventh.

Augustana wasted a big offensive game from Fobert, who finished 2-for-3 with a run scored and four driven in. Karlee Quaritsch (Palatine HS, Palatine, Ill.) was 2-for-2 with double as well. Ritzheimer absorbed her first loss of the season, falling to 4-1.

The team closes out its trip to St. Louis with another matchup against Washington University Saturday afternoon.
