2010 Season - Vikings drop 3-2 heartbreaker to Fontbonne

ST. LOUIS, Mo. – Pitcher Anastasia Hibbeler limited the potent Augustana offense and Fontbonne was able to push across the go-ahead run in the top of the seventh as the Griffins defeated the Vikings 3-2 Friday afternoon. The loss drops eighth-ranked Augustana to 8-3 on the season.

Hibbeler allowed just five hits and one earned run to a Viking attack that came into the game hitting .364 and averaging 9.6 runs a contest. Christina Trojanowski’s (Evergreen Park HS, Evergreen Park, Ill.) RBI double in the bottom of the second scored Melissa Nelson (West Aurora HS, Aurora, Ill.) and staked Viking starter Kelli Humbert (Dwight HS, Dwight, Ill.) a 1-0 lead.

Humbert held Fontbonne scoreless through the first three innings, but the Griffins got to her for a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth. Amanda Beaver led off with a walk and Amy Simon doubled one out later. Both came home on Cassandra Bremer’s double to left center and Fontbonne led 2-1. Augustana took advantage of a pair of Griffin errors in the bottom of the inning to tie the game.

The top of the seventh started uneventfully as Viking reliever Jackie Gill (Heyworth HS, Heyworth, Ill.) retired the first two Fontbonne hitters. However, Stephanie Wilson reached on a bunt single, stole second and came around to score on Katy Mueller’s RBI double to give the Griffins a 3-2 lead.

Augustana refused to go quietly in the bottom of the inning, though. Missy Fobert (Alleman HS, Rock Island, Ill.) reached on a two-out bunt single and Chrissy Rosin (Niles West HS, Morton Grove, Ill.) followed with a single to left, advancing Fobert to second. However, Hibbeler was able to retire pinch-hitter Emily Goad (Galesburg HS, Galesburg, Ill.) on a come-backer to end the game.

Hibbeler went the distance for the win and Gill took the loss despite allowing just one run in three solid innings of relief.

Augustana continues play in St. Louis on Saturday with games against Buena Vista and Central.
