2009-2010 Season - Augustana wins eight events at Spring Opener

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – Six individuals and two relay teams came away victorious for Augustana at Friday’s Early Spring Opener at Ericson Field. The Vikings finished second in the three-team field with 213.50 points. St. Ambrose won with 302.50 points and Ashford was third with 65.

Junior Hannah Hottle (Monmouth-Roseville HS, Monmouth, Ill.) won the 1500 with a time of 4:51.21. Other Viking winners included freshman Sarahbeth Jones’ (Warren Township HS, Wadsworth, Ill.) 2:22.70 at 800 meters, junior Amy Walsh’s (Cary-Grove HS, Cary, Ill.) 1:07.15 in the 400 meter hurdles, freshman Tara Bistry’s (Joliet Catholic HS, Shorewood, Ill.) 11:12.55 in the 3000, senior Caitlin Quinn’s (Metamora HS, Metamora, Ill.) 10’ 0” in the pole vault and senior Megan Timmerman’s (Mundelein HS, Mundelein, Ill.) 4’ 8¼” in the high jump. Augustana also picked up wins in the 4x800 (10:24.48) and 4x400 (4:17.57) relays.

Senior Krystal Damiano (Cary-Grove HS, Cary, Ill.) finished second behind Bistry in the 3000, running an 11:55.48. Junior Kristin Sattizahn (Erie HS, Erie, Ill.) was seventh in 12:37.97 and senior Kelsey Unseth (Willowbrook HS, Villa Park, Ill.) finished eighth with a time of 13:23.84.

Junior Ella Mathieson (Lyons Township HS, LaGrange, Ill.) leapt 16’ ½” in the long jump to take second while freshman Jennifer Prazak (Naperville North HS, Naperville, Ill.) went 14’ 8½” to earn a fifth-place finish. Freshman Jordan Mauerman’s (Albany HS, Albany, Wis.) 13’ 11¾” was good for sixth and junior Katie Rowland took eighth with a leap of 12’ 3¼”.

In the 400, freshman Valerie Bach (Palatine HS, Palatine, Ill.) ran a 1:05.62 to take second place while senior Paige Deike (LeRoy HS, LeRoy, Ill.) (1:07.06) and sophomore Morgan Gale (Oregon HS, Oregon, Ill.) (1:07.25) finished third and fourth, respectively.

Senior Libby Geison (Bloomington HS, Bloomington, Ill.) cleared 10’ to tie for second behind Quinn in the pole vault and junior Kristy Klouda (West Chicago HS, Winfield, Ill.) finished fourth at 9’ ¼”. Junior Megan Lecander (Sherrard HS, Sherrard, Ill.) and freshman Taylor Tjardes (Gibson City/Melvin-Sibley HS, Gibson City, Ill.) tied for fifth with each going 8’ 6¼” and Gale finished tied for eighth at 7’ 6½”.

Freshman Emily Margosian (Neuqua Valley HS, Naperville, Ill.) ran a 1:11.68 to take third in the 400 meter hurdles while senior teammate Valerie Bustle (Geneseo HS, Geneseo, Ill.) finished fifth in a time of 1:14.63.

In the hammer throw, sophomore Amber Gruber’s (Rolling Meadows HS, Arlington Heights, Ill.) 118’ 7” heave was good for third place and fellow sophs Melanie Battistoni (York HS, Elmhurst, Ill.) and Patricia Stoker (Niles West HS, Lincolnwood, Ill.) finished seventh and eighth, respectively, with throws of 95’ 2” and 94’ 3”.

Freshmen Annie Heifner (Oregon HS, Oregon, Wis.) and Teresa Coverick (Stagg HS, Palos Park, Ill.) took third and fifth in the 1500 with times of 5:03.90 and 5:06.23, respectively. Sophomore Angela Pisani (York HS, Elmhurst, Ill.) was sixth in 5:18.78 and junior Hannah Schneider (Downers Grove North HS, Downers Grove, Ill.) eighth in 5:47.05.

Junior Brittney Bennett (Annawan HS, Annawan, Ill.) posted a time of :17.86 in the 100 meter hurdles to take third place while teammates Margosian (:18.74) and Prazak (:19.34) were fifth and sixth.

Klouda cleared 4’ 6¼” for fourth place in the high jump. Tjardes went 4’ 4¼” to tie for fifth and Lecander cleared the same height, finishing seventh.

Junior Danielle Kilberry (Elburn, Ill.) threw the javelin 74’ 6” to take fourth place, just ahead of senior Brooke Sebek (Mother McAuley, Oak Lawn, Ill.) and freshman Devon White (DeKalb, Ill.) who threw 72’ 5’ and 71’ 9”, respectively, for fifth and sixth.

In the 200, senior Ainsley Fedler (Burlington HS, Burlington, Iowa) took fourth place in a time of :27.46 and freshman Katie Dinkel (Maharishi HS, Fairfield, Iowa) was eighth in :28.83.

Sophomore Katie Bedene (Grayslake North, Lake Villa, Ill.) finished fifth in the 100 meters with a time of :13.89 while Mathieson was sixth in :13.90 and freshman Jennifer Garrett (Glenbard North, Carol Stream, Ill.) took eighth in :14.20.

Battistoni’s throw of 102’ 1” in the discus earned her a sixth-place finish. Gruber was seventh with a toss of 97’ 10” and freshman Bethany Siwek (Woodstock HS, Woodstock, Ill.) was eighth with a 96’ 7” mark. Gruber also put the shot 30’ ½” to take eighth place.

Sophomore Melissa Lehpamer (Plainfield South HS, Plainfield, Ill.) was sixth in the 800 with a time of 2:48.42, just ahead of Schneider’s seventh-place 2:53.36.

Next weekend Augustana hosts the Viking Olympics beginning at 3:00 p.m. on Friday, March 26 and at 12:00 noon on Saturday, March 27.
