2009-2010 Season - Three qualify at Spring Opener

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – Augustana had five athletes surpass national qualifying standards as the Vikings coasted to a win at Friday’s Early Spring Opener at Ericson Field. Sophomore Phil Christensen (Kaneland HS, Maple Park, Ill.) and junior Pat Hoefle (Lena-Winslow HS, Lena, Ill.) each qualified in the discus and senior Darin Decker (Moline HS, Moline, Ill.) in the hammer throw. Freshman Alex Rindone (Marmion Academy, Geneva, Ill.) and senior Max Peterson (Mundelein HS, Mundelein, Ill.) were both close in the 100 meters while  Augustana piled up 381 points, outdistancing St. Ambrose’s 102 and Ashford’s 107.

Rindone ran a :10.88 to win the 100 with Peterson right behind at :10.93. Freshman Jacob O’Rourke (Assumption HS, Bettendorf, Iowa) was fourth in :11.39 and freshman Kyle Williams (Lake Zurich HS, Lake Zurich, Ill.) fifth at :11.51. Sophomore Floyd Mays (Mooseheart HS, Chicago, Ill.) was sixth with an :11.58 and sophomore Jimmy Zars (York HS, Elmhurst, Ill.) ran a :11.69 to finish eighth.

Christensen’s throw of 158’ 7” won the discus with Hoefle’s 158’ 0” taking second. Decker took third with a mark of 145’ 5” and Kevin Macek’s (Sandburg HS, Orland Park, Ill.) 139’ 7” was good for seventh. Decker’s qualifying mark of 173’ 1” earned him second place in the hammer throw while sophomore Adam Myers (Dixon HS, Dixon, Ill.) was third with a toss of 147’ 0”. Hoefle threw 138’ 8” for sixth place and sophomore Brian Benning (Winnebago HS, Winnebago, Ill.) was seventh with a 134’ 10” mark.

Junior Alex Stake (Williamsville HS, Sherman, Ill.) and sophomore A.J. Nice (Christian Life HS, Caledonia, Ill.) both cleared 13’ 11¼” to tie for first in the pole vault. Freshman Colton Vankirk (Rochelle HS, Rochelle, Ill.) finished third, clearing the same height. Freshman Ethan Gale (Oregon HS, Oregon, Ill.) and junior Alex Mikos (Fenton HS, Wood Dale, Ill.) both vaulted 12’ 11½” to finish fourth and fifth respectively. Freshman Carl Peters (Lyons Township HS, LaGrange, Ill.) finished sixth with a mark of 11’ 11¾” and Zars and sophomore Brett Bernatowicz (Downers Grove North HS, Downers Grove, Ill.) each went 11’ 5 ¾” to take seventh and eighth place, respectively.

Sophomore Mike Tovar (Mooseheart HS, Chicago, Ill.) won the long jump with a leap of 21’ 1½” while freshman Chad Collins (Thornridge HS, Dolton, Ill.) went 20’ 3” for third place, freshman Brett Becker (Cuba City HS, Cuba City, Wis.) was fourth with a 19’ 8 ¼” and sophomore Matt Deets (Polo HS, Polo, Ill.) took fifth place with a mark of 19’ 2¾”.

Junior Tim Whisler (Maine West HS, Des Plaines, Ill.) won the shot put with a toss of 47’ 2½” followed by Christensen (46’ 10¼”) and Decker (46’ 9”) in second and third. Freshman Joe Weber (Marmion Academy, South Elgin, Ill.) threw 44’ 1 ¼” for seventh place and Macek’s 43’ 5¾” mark was eighth.

In the javelin, senior Nate Maass (Naperville Central HS, Naperville, Ill.) won with a throw of 176’. Senior Jeff Lackaff (Downers Grove North HS, Downers Grove, Ill.) took fourth with a 146’ mark. Mikos was fifth with a throw of 143’ 6” while Macek threw 139’ 7” for seventh and freshman Mike Anderson’s (Spring Grove, Ill.) 139’ 3” was good for eighth.

Augustana took the top three spots at 3000 meters as sophomores Thomas Christian (Port Angeles HS, Port Angeles, Wash.), Billy TenBusch (Prairie Ridge HS, Cary, Ill.) and Brandon Gittelman (Naperville Central HS, Naperville, Ill.) ran 9:05.95, 9:30.41 and 9:35.79 respectively.

The Vikings had the top four finishers in the 3000-meter steeplechase with sophomore Billy Wisser (Hersey HS, Mt. Prospect, Ill.) winning in 9:44.6. Junior Lucas Westblade (Will Carleton Academy, Hillsdale, Mich.) ran 10:32.2 for second place just ahead of senior Pat Fritsch’s (Fenton HS, Bensenville, Ill.) 10:42.4 while freshman Tommy Harris (Assumption HS, Davenport, Ill.) finished fourth in 10:48.3.

Senior Dan Bailey (Deerfield HS, Deerfield, Ill.) won the 1500 with a time of 4:01.68 with teammates in places two thru six. Junior Sean Carmody (Winnebago HS, Rockford, Ill.) was second with a 4:04.97 followed by junior Matt Bowman’s (Geneva HS, Elburn, Ill.) 4:09.72, freshman Jonathan Smith’s (Moline HS, Moline, Ill.) 4:10.28, freshman Brian Pollastrini’s (York HS, Elmhurst, Ill.) 4:12.75 and junior Greg Weigand’s (Wheaton Warrenville South HS, Wheaton, Ill.) 4:14.57.

Augustana also had wins in the 4x100 (:42.40), 4x400 (3:25.66) and 4x800 (8:14.71) relays.

Sophomore Greg Davis (Carlinville HS, Carlinville, Ill.) ran a :15.68 to take second place in the 110 hurdles while freshman Pat Callan (Libertyville HS, Libertyville, Ill.) was fourth with a time of :15.97. Junior Brendan Bradley (Mundelein HS, Mundelein, Ill.) was fifth in :16.02 and David Zeko (Somonauk HS, Sheridan, Ill.) sixth in :17.63. Deets took seventh with a time of :18.23 and junior Don Anciaux (Iowa City HS, Iowa City, Iowa) was eighth in :19.22.

Freshman Steve Rogers (Crystal Lake South HS, Crystal Lake, Ill.) took second place at 400 meters with a clocking of :51.55, just ahead of junior Kris Hinchley’s (York HS, Elmhurst, Ill.) third-place :51.74. Junior Jarrett Kessel (Amboy HS, Sublette, Ill.) was fifth in a time of :53.91 and senior Mike Weiner (Naperville, Ill.) was eighth with a 1:03.30.

Davis’ :55.70 in the 400 meter hurdles was good for second place. Sophomore Marty King’s (Oswego HS, Oswego, Ill.) :56.85 took third place while Callan took fourth in :57.94 and Bradley eighth with a 1:00.47.

In the 200, senior Nick Borchert’s (Ankeny HS, Ankeny, Iowa) :22.64 earned him a second place finish while junior James Wood (St. Charles North HS, St. Charles, Ill.) and freshman Greg Patton (Bloomington HS, Bloomington, Ill.) finished third and fourth with times of :22.77 and :22.79, respectively. Freshman Dan Doubet (Galesburg HS, Galesburg, Ill.) (:23.30) and Mays (:23.40)) took sixth and seventh.

Collins placed third in the high jump, clearing 6’, while Zeko was fifth with a height of 5’ 6” and freshman Randy Lightfoot (Minooka HS, Minooka, Ill.) also went 5’ 6”, finishing sixth.

Sophomore Nick Danzy (Naperville Central HS, Naperville, Ill.) ran a 2:02.24 to take fourth place at 800 meters. Senior Jeff Miller (Dundee Crow HS, Algonquin, Ill.), was fifth with a 2:02.64, junior Tim Faith-Rosley (Glenbrook South HS, Glenview, Ill.) sixth in 2:03.51, sophomore Mike Tisza (Hersey HS, Prospect Heights, Ill.) seventh in 2:03.72 and Brian Hart (University City HS, St. Louis, Mo.) eighth in a time of 2:04.05.

Next weekend Augustana hosts the Viking Olympics beginning at 3:00 p.m. on Friday, March 26 and at 12:00 noon on Saturday, March 27.
