2010 Season - 8th-ranked Vikings defeat Washington

St. Louis, Missouri – Sheldon Ritzheimer (Wesclin HS, Trenton, Ill.) fired a one-hit shutout Friday to propel the eighth-ranked Augustana softball squad to an 8-0 win over Washington University. Ritzheimer allowed just a one-out single to Carter Malouf in the bottom of the seventh as she improved to 4-0 on the season.

After three scoreless innings, the Vikings dented the scoreboard in the top of the fourth when Stephanie Sarb (Lisle HS, Lisle, Ill.) drew a two-out walk and Christina Trojanowski (Evergreen Pak HS, Evergreen Park, Ill.) followed by reaching on an error. That set the table for Jessica Peterson’s (Marian Catholic HS, Lansing, Ill.) two-run double to right center to make the score 2-0, Augustana.

Another Washington error in the fifth helped the Vikings extend their lead. Dawn Kernich (Mt. Olive HS, Mt. Olive, Ill.) reached on a one-out Bear miscue and came home one out later on Brittany Snoreck’s (Sandburg HS, Orland Park, Ill.) RBI single. Kathy Peter then came in to relieve Bear starter Olivia Cook and the first batter she faced, Melissa Nelson (West Aurora HS, Aurora, Ill.), crushed her second home run of the season to push the lead to 5-0.

Augustana added two runs in the sixth and one in the seventh to account for the final.

Peterson and Snoreck each had two of the Vikings 11 hits. Snoreck scored twice while Peterson and Nelson each drove in a pair. Ritzheimer fanned four and walked three in going the distance.

The Vikings, now 8-2 on the season, continue play in St. Louis with a 3:00 p.m. Friday contest against Buena Vista and a pair of Saturday games against Central and Fontbonne at 3:00 p.m. and 5:00 pm., respectively.
