2009-2010 Season - Crawford finishes 4-0 as Vikings split matches

MOUNT VERNON, IowaSenior Tricia Crawford (Decorah HS, Decorah, Iowa) went 4-0 to lead the way for the Augustana women’s tennis team on Sunday, March 14 against Cornell and Graceland in Mount Vernon, Iowa.  Crawford won a pair of matches at No. 1 doubles and also earned two victories at No. 3 singles.  The Blue & Gold edged Cornell 5-4 before falling 6-3 to Graceland.  The Vikings are 4-2 this spring and 10-11 overall.

Crawford and senior Jenna Richardson (Melrose Park Walther Lutheran HS, Bellwood, Ill.) gutted out a (9-8 (2)) victory over Samantha DeGannes and Kirsten Lasley at No. 1 doubles to give the Vikings a 2-1 lead heading into singles play.  Senior Emily Doemland (Downers Grove South HS, Westmont, Ill.) and junior Sheri Hendricks (Wheaton Warrenville South HS, Warrenville, Ill.) earlier picked up the first point of the day with an (8-5) victory against Devin Harmon and Kathleen Ellis.  The Rams notched a win at No. 2 doubles, defeating junior Tricia Sapio (Barrington HS, Hoffman Estates, Ill.) and sophomore Brittany Reece (Naperville Neuqua Valley HS, Naperville, Ill.) by an (8-5) score.

After Cornell evened the match at 2-2 with a win at No. 2 singles, Crawford responded with a (6-2, 6-3) victory over Alyssa Zavislak at No. 3 singles to put Augustana back in front.  The Rams once again leveled the match at 3-3 when DeGannes defeated Richardson (7-6 (9), 6-0)) at No. 1 singles.  Doemland pulled out a huge win at No. 4 singles, rallying from a one set deficit to defeat Kara Middleton (4-6, 6-4, (10-6)).  The match was tied yet again after the Rams won in straight sets at No. 5 singles, but freshman Meghan Wethington (Geneseo HS, Geneseo, Ill.) cruised to a (6-1, 6-2) win at No. 6 singles to clinch the victory for the Blue & Gold.

Crawford and Richardson won again in the afternoon match, defeating Graceland’s Carolina Verdezoto and Laura Barriga (8-4) at No. 1 doubles.  The Yellow Jackets won at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles to grab a 2-1 edge in the match.

Crawford completed a perfect day with a (6-0, 6-3) victory over Barriga at No. 3 singles.  After winning the first set, Crawford trailed 3-1 in the second set before winning the final five games of the match.  Doemland also won her second singles match of the day, pulling out a (6-4, 6-3) win against Michelle McCabe at No. 4 singles.  Sapio had a close match at No. 2 singles, falling (6-3, 6-4) to Valeria Avina.  Graceland won the remaining matches in straight sets to secure the 6-3 win.
