2010 Season - Ufheil wins CCIW baseball honor
Augustana sophomore Joe Ufheil (Niles Notre Dame HS, Chicago, Ill.) has been named the “Pitcher of the Week” in the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin for the week ending March 7, it was announced today. Ufheil had a hand in four Viking victories last week in Winter Haven, Florida as Augustana went 7-0 on its spring trip.
Ufheil appeared in four contests, all in relief and he posted a 0.00 earned run average while working a total of 5 2/3 innings. He struck out six, walked three and did not allow a hit in 17 at-bats by opponents. Ufheil is now 1-0 on the season with three saves.
He started the week by working 2/3 of an inning and picking up a save in a 6-5 win over Grove City on February 25. He followed that with a one inning stint in a 3-2 victory over Farmingdale State, a participant in the 2009 NCAA Division III College World Series, in which he recorded his second save on February 27. He logged two innings on March 2 as Augustana defeated Beloit, the 2009 Midwest Conference champion by a score of 6-5 in 10 innings. He received credit for the victory in that game where he struck out three and didn’t walk anybody.
On the final day of the spring trip Ufheil finished up a 12-9 victory over Rose-Hulman, ranked 22nd in NCAA Division III at the time by hurling two innings and picking up his third save. He struck out two and although he walked three, he again did not yield a hit.
Ufheil, a math and education major, is the son of Joe and Mary Ufheil of Chicago, Illinois.
