2009-2010 Season - Decker and Chalus hit qualifying marks again
Two members of the Augustana men’s track & field team took advantage of the Wisconsin-Stevens Point “Pointer Last Chance” meet to hit NCAA Division III national qualifying marks on Saturday, March 6. Senior Darin Decker (Moline HS, Moline, Ill.) and junior Eric Chalus (Rochelle HS, Rochelle, Ill.) each better the provisional standard in their respective meets. The action was a little light this past weekend for veteran head coach Paul Olsen’s crew due to the fact that the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin championship meet had been a week earlier and that Augustana was on the second week of an extended spring break.
Chalus finished second in the pole vault with a clearance of 15’ 3 ¾”, which was a half inch lower than his previous best this season (15’ 4 ¼” at the Lutheran Triangular in Waverly, Iowa on January 30). Decker placed ninth in the 35 pound weight toss with a mark of 56’ 0” to better the qualifying mark. His best this year is a school record 58’ 3” at the CCIW meet in Naperville, Illinois on February 26.
The Vikings had four other competitors place in the meet although none of them had performances better than the NCAA qualifying standard in their respective events. Senior Max Petersen (Mundelein HS, Mundelein, Ill.) placed third in the 55 with a time of :06.52, which is a best for him this year. Freshman Greg Patton (Bloomington HS, Bloomington, Ill.) took sixth in the 400 in :50.33. Junior Matt Bowman (Geneva HS, Geneva, Ill.) finished fifth in the mile with a clocking of 4:26.94. Freshman Colton VanKirk (Rochelle HS, Rochelle, Ill.) was seventh in the pole vault with a clearance of 14’ 4”.
The NCAA Division III national meet will be held March 12-13 at DePauw University in Greencastle, Indiana.
