2010 Season - Shutout ends successful softball trip at 7-2

Sophomore Erica Aten (Moline HS, Moline, Ill.) and junior Kelli Humbert (Dwight HS, Dwight, Ill.) combined on a two hitter as Augustana defeated Lebanon Valley 8-0 in non-conference softball action on Thursday, March 4 in Clermont, Florida. With the victory, the Vikings closed out their spring trip with an impressive 7-2 record.

Aten started and went the first five innings, striking out two and allowing just two hits as she won for the first time this year. Humbert worked the final two innings and she did not allow a run while posting one strikeout.

Augustana scored in each of the first five innings to put the game out of reach. In the first inning junior Dawn Kernich (Mt. Olive HS, Mt. Olive, Ill.) singled with one out and stole second and eventually scored on an error. The Vikings loaded the bases in the second  and Andi Walker (Plainfield South HS, Plainfield, Ill.) scored on an error and Missy Fobert (Rock Island Alleman HS, Rock Island, Ill.) came home on a walk.

In the third another bases loaded walk, this time to senior Chrissy Rosin (Niles West HS, Morton Grove, Ill.), brought in the fourth run of the game. A ground out by freshman Dege Abate (Downers Grove South HS, Downers Grove, Ill.) brought home junior Melissa Nelson (Aurora West HS, Aurora, Ill.) in the fourth to make it 5-0. The lead grew to 7-0 in the fifth when Nelson’s two out single drove in a pair of runs.  The Vikings added a single run in the top of the seventh.

Augustana banged out nine hits with Kernich leading the way with two hits. Nelson had three RBI in the victory.
