2010 Season - Ritzheimer beats second ranked Ohio Northern
Junior Sheldon Ritzheimer (Wesclin HS, Trenton, Ill.) tossed a complete game six hitter as Augustana defeated second ranked Ohio Northern 2-1 on Thursday, March 4 in Clermont, Florida. Ritzheimer struck out five and didn’t walk a batter as she handcuffed the Polar Bears, who were ranked second in the NCAA Division III pre-season polls by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association. She moved her record to 3-0 on the season and helped the Vikings to a 6-2 mark.
There wasn’t a lot of offense in this game as Augustana managed just seven hits off a pair of Ohio Northern hurlers.
The Vikings used some power to plate their two runs in the second inning. Junior Melissa Nelson (West Aurora HS, Aurora, Ill.) singled to lead off against Ohio Northern’s Courtney Cash and then junior Stephanie Sarb (Lisle HS, Lisle, Ill.) followed with a home run, her fourth of the year. That made it 2-0 and was all the scoring until the Polar Bears pushed across a run in the sixth.
Ritzheimer set Ohio Northern down in order in the first, second and fifth innings. In the sixth, when she gave up the lone run, she coaxed a ground out with the tying run on third base. In the seventh she allowed a single to Lisa Light with one out and then Light gave way to pinch runner Ashley Sujkowski. Ritzheimer struck out Cassie Gaye for the second out of the inning. Meghan Anten then blasted a double to right center and it appeared as if the game would be tied. However, a perfect relay from centerfield Missy Fobert (Rock Island Alleman HS, Rock Island, Ill.) to first baseman Christina Trojanowski (Evergreen Park HS, Evergreen Park, Ill.) and to catcher Brittany Snoreck (Carl Sandburg HS, Orland Park, Ill.) cut down Gaye at the plate to end the game.
Nelson pounded out three hits to lead the offense and Sarb added two.
