2010 Season - 22nd ranked Rose-Hulman is latest victim
In a wild affair, the Augustana Vikings knocked off 22nd ranked Rose-Hulman by a score of 12-9 on Thursday, March 4 in Winter Haven, Florida. With the win, Augustana put the finishing touches on a very successful spring break trip, wrapping things up with a perfect 7-0 record.
Thursday’s game with Rose-Hulman ebbed and flowed as the Vikings scored four runs in the top of the third and three in the top of the fifth to take a 7-0 lead. The Engineers got to Augustana starter Mike Trotta (Niles Notre Dame HS, Chicago, Ill.) in the fifth, however, scoring seven runs to tie the game at 7-7. The Vikings got one run back in the sixth and added two in the seventh to make it 10-7 before Rose-Hulman put two on the board in the bottom of the seventh to close the gap to 10-9. Augustana score two in the tip of the ninth for some breathing room and then sophomore reliever Joe Ufheil (Niles Notre Dame HS, Chicago, Ill.) shut the door when he struck out leadoff man Andrew Bilse with two on for the final out of the game.
There was certainly plenty of action before that, however. With the game scoreless through the first two innings, the Vikings roughed up Rose-Hulman starter Gannon Sadzek in the third innings to the tune of four runs on four hits and they were helped by one error. Sophomore Kevin Serna (Rolling Meadows HS, Arlington Heights, Ill.) doubled in sophomore Mike Barker (Grandview HS, Centennial Colo. – now resides in Marina del Ray, Calif.) with the first run. Junior Dave Hoffman (Cary-Grove HS, Cary, Ill.) brought Serna home with a sacrifice fly. Kurt Schmidt (Grayslake Central HS, Grayslake, Ill.), who had singled, came home on a triple by freshman Tyler Wilson (Valparaiso HS, Valparaiso, Ind.). Wilson scored the fourth run of the inning on an error on a ball hit by freshman Nick Kujawa (Carl Sandburg HS, Orland Park, Ill.).
In the top of the fifth Schmidt and Hoffman led off with singles and both scored on Wilson’s second triple of the game. Kujawa’s single plated Wilson to make the score 7-0.
That lead didn’t last through the next half inning as Rose-Hulman erupted for seven runs on seven hits and one costly Augustana error in the fifth and suddenly the game was tied 7-7. All seven of the Engineer runs were scored with two outs.
The Vikings rebounded with a single run in the top of the sixth. Serna singled to lead off and advanced to second on a passed ball. Hoffman’s single brought Serna in to make it 8-7. In the top of the seventh junior Mike Lamb (Ottawa HS, Ottawa, Ill.) walked with one out and stole second. Sophomore Joe Moran (Niles Notre Dame HS, Chicago, Ill.) walked and Barker singled to load the bases. An error moved Barker to second, Moran to third and allowed Lamb to score. Serna’s ground out brought in Moran to boost the lead to 10-7.
Rose-Hulman scored a pair of runs off Augustana reliever Josiah Martin (Canton HS, Canton, Ill.) in the bottom of the seventh but Martin coaxed Bilse to hit into an inning ending double play.
In the ninth the Vikings struck for two more runs and they came with two out. Serna walked and stole second. Schmidt’s singled drove in Serna and Hoffman’s double chased Schmidt home with the 12th and final run of the game.
The top of the batting order pulled its weight at the combination of Serna, Schmidt, Hoffman, Wilson and Kujawa combined for 13 hits in 26 at-bats with nine runs scored and 10 runs-batted-in.
Martin picked up the victory and Ufheil worked the final two innings to pick up his second save of the year.
