2010 Season - Offense erupts in 21-4 win over MSOE
Offense was not a problem in Augustana’s 21-4 non-conference victory over Milwaukee School of Engineering on Wednesday, March 3 in Aurburndale, Florida. The Vikings used a total of 21 players in the game and banged out 22 hits, five of them of the extra base variety en route to upping their record to 6-0 on the season.
Augustana scored in every inning and used an eight run uprising in the top of the fourth to break the game wide open. In the first inning freshman Kurt Schmidt (Grayslake Central HS, Grayslake, Ill.) singled with one out and eventually scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of freshman Tyler Wilson (Valparaiso HS, Valparaiso, Ind.). A single off the bat of sophomore Mike Barker (Grandview HS, Centennial, Colo. – now resides in Marina del Ray, Calif.) brought home junior Mike Lamb (Ottawa HS, Ottawa, Ill.) in the second to make it 2-0.
Lamb’s two run double keyed a three run third to push the advantage to 5-0. After the Engineers scored a single run in the bottom of the third off Augustana starter Mike Pagano (Niles Notre Dame HS, Chicago, Ill.) to trim the margin to 5-1, the Viking offense went to work. A total of 12 batters came to the plate in the eight run fourth. Six of them delivered base hits with a two RBI single off the bat of freshman Nick Kujawa (Carl Sandburg HS, Orland Park, Ill.) starting the scoring parade. Junior Dave Hoffman’s (Cary-Grove HS, Cary, Ill.) two run double ended the carnage.
For good measure Augustana scored four in the fifth, three in the sixth and one in the seventh before the game was ended.
Six Vikings had at least two hits in the onslaught with senior catcher Jarl Dahlgren (Rockford Auburn HS, Rockford, Ill.) leading the way with four while scoring three runs and driving in one. Schmidt, Hoffman, junior Mike Lamb (Ottawa HS, Ottawa, Ill.), freshman Mike Locasto (Oak Park-River Forest HS, Oak Park, Ill.), and freshman Joe Cecchi (Romeoville HS, Romeoville, Ill.) all had two hits. Freshman Dave Balzer (Morris HS, Shorewood, Ill.) drilled a home run and freshman Jared McIntosh (Davenport Assumption HS, Davenport, Iowa) had a triple.
Pagano went four innings and was given credit for the victory. He struck out four and allowed just two hits as he moved his record to 2-0 on the season.
