2010 Season - Serna's double is game winner against Beloit

Sophomore leftfielder Kevin Serna’s (Rolling Meadows HS, Arlington Heights, Ill.) double proved to be the difference on Tuesday, March 2 in Winter Haven, Florida. He drove home sophomore centerfielder Mike Barker (Grandview HS, Centennial, Colo. – now resides in Marina del Ray, Calif.) with the winning run in the bottom of the 10th inning in a 6-5 win over Beloit to allow Augustana to stay undefeated in baseball at 5-0.

The game was knotted up at 5-5 heading into the bottom of the tenth when Barker led off with a single. He moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by sophomore second baseman Joe Moran (Niles Notre Dame HS, Chicago, Ill.). That set up Serna to deliver and he did, with his second hit of the game.

Sophomore Joe Ufheil (Niles Notre Dame HS, Chicago, Ill.) worked the final two innings and was credited with the victory. He struck out three and did not allow either a hit or a walk in his two innings of work.

Augustana struck first off Buccaneer starter Mike Kovach with a pair of runs in the bottom of the second inning. Freshman Nick Kujawa (Carl Sandburg HS, Orland Park, Ill.) led off the inning with a single and went to third on a single by freshman Tyler Wilson (Valparaiso HS, Valparaiso, Ind.). A single off the bat of junior T.J. O’Donnell (New Trier HS, Northbrook, Ill.) brought home Kujawa with the game’s first run and Wilson went to third. He scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of junior right fielder Mike Lamb (Ottawa HS, Ottawa, Ill.).

Beloit scored a single run in the top of the third off Viking starter Matt Erickson (Marmion Academy, Channahon, Ill.) to make it 2-1. In the bottom of the fourth Lamb homered with Wilson, who had singled to lead off the inning, aboard to push the advantage to 4-1. The Buccaneers pushed across three runs on two hits in the top of the sixth to tie the game at 4-4.

In the top of the eighth Beloit took a 5-4 lead with a single run off reliever Kevin Kulig (Benet Academy, Lemont, Ill.) but the Vikings tied the game in the bottom of the frame. With one out Serna singled and went to second on a single by junior third baseman Dave Hoffman (Cary-Grove HS, Fox River Grove, Ill.). A ground out off the bat of Kujawa moved both runners up a base and Serna scored the tying run on a wild pitch.

Augustana had 11 hits off Kovach, who went the distance, with Wilson leading the way with three while Serna had two.
