2010 Season - Big innings key win over Mary Washington

A pair of big innings helped Augustana secure a 9-3 non-conference victory over Mary Washington in softball action on Tuesday, March 2 in Clermont, Florida. The Vikings scored four runs in the top of the second and three in the seventh and pounded out 11 hits in moving to 4-1 on the season.

Mary Washington scored first when Eliza Crowe hammered a pitch by Augustana starter Jackie Gill (Heyworth HS, Heyworth, Ill.) to left field with two outs in the first. Down 1-0, the Vikings got busy in the top of the second.

Junior Melissa Nelson (West Aurora HS, Aurora, Ill.) led off with a triple to right center and junior Stephanie Sarb (Lisle HS, Lisle, Ill.) followed with a walk and she then stole second. Freshman Jessica Peterson (Marian Catholic HS, Lansing, Ill.) grounded out but scored Nelson on the play to tie the game at 1-1. Sarb took third and later scored on a wild pitch. Sophomore Erica Aten (Moline HS, Moline, ill.) walked and went to second on a single to center by senior Missy Fobert (Rock Island Alleman HS, Rock Island, Ill.).  At this time junior Jamie Bauerlein (Lisle HS, Lisle, Ill.) pinch ran for Aten. A passed ball moved Bauerlein to third and Fobert to second. Junior Dawn Kernich (Mt. Olive HS, Mt. Olive, Ill.) walked to load the bases. Senior Karlee Quaritsch (Palatine HS, Palatine, Ill.) laced a single to left field to score Fobert and Bauerlein to make the score 4-1.

In the top of the fourth Fobert homered to left field to up the ante to 5-1 but Mary Washington scored in the bottom of the fourth to cut the lead to 5-2. In the top of the fifth Sarb doubled with two outs and scored when a ball hit by Peterson was misplayed. That made it 6-2.

The Vikings erupted for three runs in the top of the seventh to put the game out of reach. Sarb led off with a single and gave way to pinch runner Mallory Huml (Kaneland HS, Elburn, Ill.). Peterson sacrificed Huml to second for the first out of the inning. After another out, Ashley Mulligan (Bradley Bourbonnais HS, Bourbonnais, Ill.) reached on an error and Huml scored an unearned run.  Senior Chrissy Rosin (Niles West HS, Morton Grove, Ill.) singled to left to move Mulligan to second. Kernich reached on the second error of the inning by Mary Washington and went to second as Mulligan scored and Rosin went to third. Rosin scored the final run of the inning, and the game, for the Vikings on a wild pitch.

Mary Washington put up one run in the bottom of the seventh but reliever Kelli Humbert (Dwight HS, Dwight, Ill.) got the final out on a ground ball to third base.

Quaritsch had three hits and two RBI while Sarb, Fobert and Rosin each had two hits. Gill picked up the victory on the mound to move to 2-1 on the year. She worked four innings with four strikeouts and allowed four hits. Humbert worked the final three innings and gave up just one hit.
