2010 Season - Quick start fuels win over Lake Superior

Scoring seven runs in the first three innings proved to be the catalyst as Augustana rolled to a 9-4 non-conference victory over Lake Superior State, an NCAA Division II team, on Tuesday, March 2 in Clermont Florida. The Vikings of veteran head coach Kris Kistler scored two runs each in the first and second innings and then added three in the bottom of the third to seize a 7-2 lead. They never looked back as they won their third game in a row and upped their record to 3-1 on the season.

Lake Superior State jumped out to a 2-0 lead on Augustana starter Sheldon Ritzheimer (Wesclin HS, Trenton, Ill.). The Lakers only had one hit in the inning but Ritzheimer walked two of the first three batters she faced and she also committed an error which did not help.

Down 2-0, the Vikings went to work in the bottom of the frame. After two were out, senior Karlee Quaritsch (Palatine HS, Palatine, Ill.) got things started by drawing a base-on-balls. She stole second and then scored when a ball hit by senior catcher Brittany Snoreck (Carl Sandburg HS, Orland Park, Ill.) was misplayed. Snoreck ended up on second base and she came home on a double to right by junior Melissa Nelson (West Aurora HS, Aurora, Ill.).

In the second junior Dawn Kernich (Mt. Olive HS, Mt. Olive, Ill.) led off with a bunt single  and went to second  on a sacrifice by senior Andi Walker (Plainfield South HS, Plainfield, Ill.). Missy Fobert (Rock Island Alleman HS, Rock Island, Ill.) was the next batter and her ball was bobbled in the infield, allowing her to go all the way to second and sending Kernich to third. Chrissy Rosin (Maine West HS, Morton Grove, Ill.) drove in Kernich with a sacrifice bunt but Rosin was safe on the play at first and Fobert went to third. A single by sophomore Christina Trojanowski (Evergreen Park HS, Evergreen Park, Ill.) drove in Fobert to make the score 4-2.

The Vikings used four hits to produce three runs in the third. Snoreck led off with a single and a double to right by Nelson, her second of the game, moved Snoreck to third. Junior Stephanie Sarb (Lisle HS, Lisle, Ill.) hit a ground ball to short and Snoreck was cut down at the plate trying to score but Nelson moved to third. Junior Jamie Bauerlein (Lisle HS, Lisle, Ill.) ran for Sarb. Bauerlein and Nelson then worked a double steal with Nelson scoring and Bauerlein ending up on second.  Walker’s single to right drove home Bauerlein and Fobert’s triple brought in Walker to push the lead to 7-2.

Augustana added single runs in the fourth and the fifth while Lake Superior State scored a pair of runs in the top of the fourth.

Ritzheimer worked the first three innings and struck out three and gave up just two hits. She was relieved in the top of the fourth by junior Rachel Perry (Chillicothe IVS, Chillicothe, Ill.). Perry went the final four innings and posted three strikeouts and allowed just two hits.
