2010 Season - Lamb's triple, double key 7-2 win over Widener

Freshman Jared McIntosh (Davenport Assumption HS, Davenport, Iowa) and sophomore Josiah Martin (Canton HS, Canton, Ill.) combined on a three hitter as Augustana stayed undefeated with a 7-2 non-conference win over Widener. The victory came on Monday, March 1 at Disney Hess Stadium in Orlando, Florida and it pushed the Vikings’ record to 4-0 on the young season.

McIntosh was the starter and worked five innings, giving up just three hits while striking out three. He gave way to Martin in the sixth inning and Martin worked four flawless frames, striking out three without allowing a hit.

Widener jumped ahead 1-0 with a run in the top of the first inning but the Vikings got that back right away. In the bottom of the first sophomore leftfielder Kevin Serna (Rolling Meadows HS, Arlington Heights, Ill.) singled and then went to third on a single by junior third baseman Dave Hoffman (Cary-Grove HS, Cary, Ill.). A single by freshman designated hitter Tyler Wilson (Valparaiso HS, Valparaiso, Ind.) with two outs brought Serna home with the tying run.

In the bottom of the second Augustana pushed two runs across to make it 3-1. Freshman shortstop Kurt Schmidt (Grayslake Central HS, Grayslake, Ill.) led off with a double. A sacrifice off the bat of senior catcher Jarl Dahlgren (Rockford Auburn HS, Rockford, Ill.) moved Schmidt to third. Sophomore centerfielder Mike Barker (Grandview HS, Centennial, Colo.) was hit by a pitch. A ground out off the bat of sophomore second baseman Joe Moran (Niles Notre Dame HS, Chicago, Ill.) scored Schmidt with what would prove to be the winning run and Barker advanced to second. Barker scored on a single by Serna.

The Vikings kept rolling in the third and put up two runs. Junior right fielder Mike Lamb (Ottawa HS, Ottawa, Ill.) doubled with two outs and went to third when his ball was misplayed in the outfield. Schmidt’s single scored Lamb and then Schmidt promptly stole second and scored on a single off the bat of Barker.

Widener got one run back in the top of the fifth to make it 5-2 but Augustana scored one in the bottom of the frame. Lamb tripled to lead off and scored on a sacrifice fly by Dahlgren. In the bottom of the eighth the Vikings added an insurance run when Hoffman scored on a ground out off the bat of Lamb.

Lamb, Schmidt and Serna each had two hits in the contest.
