2010 Season - Quaritsch grand slam paves way against Alma

Augustana career home run leader Karlee Quaritsch (Palatine HS, Palatine, Ill.) connected on her first round-tripper of the season, a grand slam, as the Vikings followed up Sunday morning’s 16-0 thrashing of Hiram with an 11-2 victory over Alma in the afternoon. Stephanie Sarb (Lisle HS, Lisle, Ill.), who hit a pair of grand slams in the Hiram game, added a three-run blast against Alma as Augustana improved to 2-1 on the young season.

After Sheldon Ritzheimer (Wesclin HS, Trenton, Ill.) set the Scots down in order in the top of the first, the Vikings jumped out in front for the third game in a row in the bottom of the inning. Chrissy Rosin (Niles West HS, Morton Grove, Ill.) led off the frame with a single to left and eventually scored when Melissa Nelson reached on an error by Alma shortstop Houston Verbeck.

The Scots wasted no time in evening the score at 1-1 in the top of the second. Ritzheimer’s bases-loaded walk to Chelsea Jensen forced in Verbeck, but the Augustana hurler escaped with no further damage by getting Kelly Koenigsknecht to pop out to Viking catcher Quaritsch with the bases loaded.

Augustana continued its offensive onslaught in the bottom of the second. Andi Walker (Plainfield South HS, Plainfield, Ill.) walked to lead off the inning and Missy Fobert (Alleman HS, Rock Island, Ill.) reached when Alma’s Kasey Miller couldn’t field her sacrifice bunt. After Rosin moved both runners up with a sacrifice, Christina Trojanowski (Evergreen Park HS, Evergreen Park, Ill.) drew a base-on-balls to set the table for Quaritsch, who sent a Brittany Grys pitch out of the park for her first home run of the season and the school-record 21st of her career. A Dawn Kernich (Mt. Olive HS, Mt. Olive, Ill.) single to center scored Melissa Nelson (West Aurora HS, Aurora, Ill.) and Fobert drew a bases-loaded walk to force in Sarb as the Vikings capped a six-run second to take a 7-1 lead.

After Ritzheimer retired Alma in order in the top of the third, the Vikings added another run in the bottom when Nelson drove in Trojanowski with a double to right, pushing the lead to 8-1 and knocking Grys from the game.

Sophomore Erica Aten (Moline HS, Coal Valley, Ill.) relieved Ritzheimer in the fifth and the Scots were able to push across a run on an Emily Ross triple and Sarah Johnson double, but the Vikings ended the contest early with three runs in the bottom of the inning. After Brittany Snoreck (Sandburg HS, Orland Park, Ill.) and Nelson each singled, Sarb finished her huge day with a three-run homer off Alma pitcher Erin Pintek.

It was Sarb’s first hit of the day’s second game and she finished the day four for eight with four runs scored, three home runs and 11 RBI.

Ritzheimer, who allowed three hits and four walks while fanning three in four innings, picked up the win to go to 1-0 on the year. In addition to Sarb and Quaritsch, Nelson had a big game offensively with three hits in four at-bats, two runs scored and two RBI.

As Augustana continues play in Florida, next up is a pair of games on Tuesday, March 2. The Vikings face Division II Lake Superior State at 9:30 a.m. and take on Mary Washington at 11:30 a.m.
