2010 Season - Sarb drives in eight in 16-0 win over Hiram

Augustana junior Stephanie Sarb (Lisle HS, Lisle, Ill.) hit a pair of grand slams and Jackie Gill (Heyworth HS, Heyworth, Ill.) and Kelli Humbert (Dwight HS, Dwight, Ill.) combined on a three-hit shutout as the Vikings evened their record at 1-1 with a 16-0 win over Hiram Sunday. Sarb connected with the bases loaded in the first and fifth innings and also had a fourth-inning single.

For the second game in a row, the Vikings had a big first inning. Christina Trojanowski (Evergreen Park HS, Evergreen Park, Ill.) got things started with a one-out triple and scored when Karlee Quaritsch (Palatine HS, Palatine, Ill.) followed with a double to right-center. Brittany Snoreck (Sandburg HS, Orland Park, Ill.) and Jessica Peterson each drew walks sandwiched around a Melissa Nelson (West Aurora HS, Aurora, Ill.) single and Augustana led 2-0 and had the bases loaded. Sarb then sent a Sara Bogdan pitch over the center field fence to push the lead to 6-0.

Hiram used a pair of bunt singles and a walk to load the bases with one out in the bottom of the first, but Gill got out of trouble by inducing the Terriers’ Ashley Pike to hit into an inning-ending double play.

The Vikings added four more runs in the third. Ironically, the frame started with Sarb being retired for the only time all game. A two-out infield hit by Missy Fobert (Alleman HS, Rock Island, Ill.) got things started. She stole second and scored on a Chrissy Rosin (Niles West HS, Morton Grove, Ill.) double. Trojanowski brought Rosin home with a single to center and after Quaritsch was hit by a pitch, Snoreck pounded a two-run double to center to extend the lead to 10-0.

Meanwhile, Gill cruised through a perfect second and third before giving way to Humbert, who allowed just one hit, a Pike single, as she finished up the final two innings.

Emilee Goad’s (Galesburg HS, Galesburg, Ill.) RBI single to right scored Peterson in the fourth inning and consecutive singles by Quaritsch, Snoreck and Dawn Kernich (Mt. Olive HS, Mt. Olive, Ill.) started the Vikings’ final scoring outburst in the fifth. Peterson followed with her second RBI walk of the day to set the table for Sarb, who responded with her second grand slam of the game, this one off Terrier reliever Sarah Padilla.

Gill retired the last seven batters she faced and picked up the win to even her record at 1-1.

Several Vikings had big offensive days in addition to Sarb. Peterson scored three runs on top of her two RBI. Quaritsch had a pair of hits, scored three times and drove in a run as well. Snoreck also had two hits, scoring twice and driving in a pair.

The Vikings play Alma next in a 1:30 p.m. contest on Sunday, February 28.
