2009-10 Season - Nelson and Pelton named to all-CCIW team

Augustana’s Kyle Nelson (Deerfield HS, Deerfield, Ill.) and Matt Pelton (Bloomington, Ill. Central Catholic HS, Houston, Texas) were named to the CCIW’s all-conference first and second teams, respectively, today. Pelton earned All-CCIW recognition for the third year in a row, having been named to the second team last year and third team in 2007-08.

Nelson, a 6-9 junior post player, leads the Vikings with averages of 14.9 points and 7.7 rebounds per game. His .612 field goal percentage (156 of 255) also leads the team and represents the fifth-highest single-season mark in school history. Nelson was the CCIW’s second-leading rebounder this year, snaring an average of 8.2 per game in conference play. He was also second in the conference in field goal percentage at .655 (97 of 148) and seventh in scoring with an average of 15.6 points per game. At one point this season, he connected on 16 consecutive field goal attempts, 12 of which came in a career-high 28-point performance against Elmhurst on January 30. Kyle is the son of Jeanne and Barry Nelson of Deerfield, Illinois.

Pelton, a 6-3 senior guard, was also named this week to ESPN The Magazine’s Academic All-America third team. The Vikings’ second-leading scorer at 11.9 points a game, he leads the team in three-point field goals with 42, steals with 40 and free throw percentage at .828 (48 of 58). His 60 assists are second on the team as well. Pelton finished fourth in the CCIW in steals at 1.43 per game, fifth in assists at 3.14 per game, sixth in three-point field goals with 1.79 per game and ninth in three-point percentage at .403 (25 of 62). His .870 free throw percentage (20 of 23) in league play would have been third in the CCIW, but he fell short of the necessary makes to qualify. Matt is the son of Colette Pelton of Houston, Texas and Chris Pelton of St. Louis, Missouri.

Nelson was joined on the first team by Carthage’s Steve Djurickovic, a junior who led the conference in scoring and assists for the third straight year to earn the CCIW’s Fred Young Most Outstanding Player Award. Sophomore forward Tim McCrary of Wheaton, the league’s rebounding leader, and teammate Ben Panner, a senior guard, also earned first team honors as did Illinois Wesleyan junior Doug Sexauer, who led the league in field goal percentage.

In addition to Pelton, the second team consisted of Millikin senior center Joscar Demby, Illinois Wesleyan junior guard Sean Johnson, freshman forward Derek Raridon of North Central and North Park senior forward Nick Williams.

Bosko Djurickovic, who led Carthage to its first CCIW championship since 2003 and its first outright title since 2002, is this year’s CCIW Coach of the Year.
