2009-2010 Season - Vikings dominate at Spartan Open

DUBUQUE, Iowa – Darin Decker (Moline HS, Moline, Ill.) won the weight throw with a school-record 58’ 2” mark and Alex Rindone (Marmion Academy, Geneva, Ill.) also set a new school record with a second-place :22.53 in the 200 at Saturday’s Spartan Open in Dubuque, Iowa.  In addition to Decker, Augustana had six other individual winners as well as a win in the 1600 relay. The Vikings totaled 247 points to win the 12-team event. Loras, with 59 points, finished a distant second.

Decker’s heave surpassed the previous school record of 57’ ¾” set by Tom McIntire in 2006 and Rindone’s time bested Jason Myers’ :22.56 set in 2005. Other Viking event winners included Patrick Zeunik’s (Bloomington Central Catholic HS, Bloomington, Ill.) NCAA-qualifying 46’ 3½” in the triple jump, Dan Doubet’s (Galesburg HS, Galesburg, Ill.) :51.34 in the 400,  Matt Somers’ (Naperville Central HS, Naperville, Ill.) 1:23.71 in the 600, Jason Langslet’s (Mundelein HS, Mundelein, Ill.) 1:57.23 at 800 meters, Dan Bailey’s (Deerfield HS, Deerfield, Ill.) 4:21.67 in the mile and Greg Davis’ (Carlinville HS, Carlinville, Ill.) :08.10 in the 55-meter hurdles. Steven Rogers (Crystal Lake South HS, Crystal Lake, Ill.), Doubet, Marty King (Oswego HS, Oswego, Ill.) and Davis ran a 3:26.24 to win the 4x400 relay.

Brian Pollastrini (York HS, Elmhurst, Ill.) took third at 3000 meters, but finished behind two unattached runners to claim the 10 first-place team points. He finished in a time of 9:00.33. Teammate Tom Ries (Regina HS, Iowa City, Iowa) finished fifth in 9:01.60. Chad Collins (Thornridge HS, Dolton, Ill.) went 43’ 4¼” in the triple jump to take second place behind Zeunik.

Greg Patton (Bloomington HS, Bloomington, Ill.) ran a :22.98 in the 200 to finish third, right behind Rindone, who also took fifth at 55 meters with a :06.68 time. Greg Weigand (Wheaton-Warrenville South HS, Wheaton, Ill.) and Rogers finish second and third behind Langslet at 800 meters, running 1:57.85 and 1:58.21, respectively.

In the mile, Brad Keating’s (Cary-Grove HS, Cary, Ill.) 4:23.65 was good for second behind Bailey and teammates Mike Tisza (Hersey HS, Prospect Heights, Ill.) and Jonathan Smith (Moline HS, Moline, Ill.) finished fourth and seventh in times of 4:24.27 and 4:28.51, respectively. Brendan Bradley (Mundelein HS, Mundelein, Ill.) was second behind Davis in the 55-meter hurdles with a time of :08.19 and Pat Callan (Libertyville HS, Libertyville, Ill.) was fourth in :08.29.

Decker took second in the shot with a toss of 47’ 5¼” while Tim Whisler (Maine West HS, Des Plaines, Ill.) and Brian Benning (Winnebago HS, Winnebago, Ill.) threw 46’ 8” and 46’ 2½” to take third and fourth respectively. Kevin Macek (Sandburg HS, Orland Park, Ill.) finished sixth with a throw of 44’ 5¼”. Phil Christensen (Kaneland HS, Maple Park, Ill.) had a 52’ 5¼” and Benning a 52’ 2” in the weight throw to finish third and fourth, respectively.

A.J. Nice (Christian Life HS, Caledonia, Ill.) cleared 14’ 3¼” for second place in the pole vault while Colton Vankirk (Rochelle HS, Rochelle, Ill.) went 13’ 9 ¼” to take fourth and Edmund Hamilton (Moline HS, Moline, Ill.) took seventh with a 12’ 9½”. Alex Stake (Williamsville HS, Sherman, Ill.) cleared 6’ 1½” to finish fourth in the high jump while Nate Maass (Naperville Central HS, Naperville, Ill.) was sixth with a 5’ 11½” and Collins also went 5’ 11½” and finished eighth. Stake was also third in the long jump with a leap of 21’ 6¾” and Brett Becker (Cuba City HS, Cuba City, Wis.) fourth with a mark of 21’ 5¼”.

Augustana will be competing next in the CCIW Championship in Naperville, Illinois on Friday, February 26 and Saturday, February 27.
