2009-2010 Season - Decker, Bailey earn CCIW honors

Augustana senior Dan Bailey (Deerfield HS, Deerfield, Ill.) was named College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin’s “Runner of the Week”, and senior Darin Decker (Moline HS, Moline, Ill.) was named the CCIW’s “Field Athlete of the Week” for men’s track and field for the week ending February 13th.  Both senior captains had outstanding performances at the Augustana Invitational, with Decker bettering the NCAA Division III provisional qualifying mark in the weight throw and Bailey winning the 3,000 meter race.

Decker won the weight throw with a mark of 56’ 9 1/2” and took second in the shot put after a 48’ 6 ¼” throw.  The toss of 56’ 9 ½” is more than two feet farther than the qualifying mark.  Decker, a NCAA Division III qualifier in hammer toss during outdoor track last year, is feeding off his success from last year and having a great 2010 campaign.  Both of his throws are best on the team so far this year, showing the hard work he put in during the off-season to continue that success.

Bailey won the 3,000 meter run with a time of 8:40.99, as he was one of seven Vikings to finish under 9:00.00 in the race.  Bailey has the top time in both the 3,000 and the 5,000 so far this season for Augustana, running a 14:58.89 in the 5,000 at the Warhawk Invitational on February 5th, just five seconds off the provisional qualifying mark.

Both Decker and Bailey have been strong leaders of Head Coach Paul Olsen’s Viking squad this year which is currently ranked 3rd in the NCAA Division III indoor power rankings.  After finishing 5th at the loaded Warhawk Invitational February 5th, the team had another strong showing at the Augustana Invitational this past weekend where the Vikings won nine events at the non-scoring meet.

The Vikings will compete next at the University of Dubuque Invite on Saturday, February 20 in Dubuque, Iowa.

Dan is a Business Administration major, and is the son of Doug and Jo Bailey of Deerfield, Illinois.  Darin is a Business Administration and Marketing major, and is the son of Doreene Decker of Moline, Illinois.
