2009-2010 Season - Decker and Benning hit qualifying marks
Senior Darin Decker (Moline HS, Moline, Ill.) and sophomore Brian Benning (Winnebago HS, Winnebago, Ill.) stole the show at the Augustana Invitational on Saturday, February 13. The non-scoring meet was held jointly at the Carver PE Center and the PepsiCo Center and Decker and Benning topped a sizeable list of tremendous Augustana performances.
In the weight throw Decker won the event with a toss of 56’ 9 ½” while Benning took second with a mark of 54’ 11 ½”. Both of those distances were better than the NCAA Division III qualifying mark in the event. The NCAA Division III Indoor Track & Field Championships will be held on March 12-13 in Greencastle, Indiana at DePauw University. For good measure, sophomore teammate Phil Christensen (Kaneland HS, Elburn, Ill.) took third with a toss of 54’ 4 ½”. Decker also was second in the shot put with a heave of 48’ 6 ¼”.
Augustana won a total of nine events in the meet and didn’t have a single double winner in an impressive display of talent and depth. The Vikings won four individual running events, two relays and three field events.
Senior Max Petersen (Mundelein HS, Mundelein, Ill.) won the 55 in a time of :06.60 and took second in the 200 in :23.34. Freshman Greg Patton (Bloomington HS, Bloomington, Ill.) won the 300 in :36.60 and placed third in the 55 in :06.75. Junior Greg Weigand (Wheaton Warrenville South HS, Wheaton, Ill.) won the 800 in 1:59.05 while senior Dan Bailey (Deerfield HS, Deerfield, Ill.) took first in the 3000 in 8:40.99.
The 800 meter relay team of freshman Brett Becker (Cuba City HS, Cuba City, Wis.), sophomore Marty King (Oswego HS, Oswego, Ill.), freshman Jacob O’Rourke (Davenport Assumption HS, Bettendorf, Iowa) and freshman Alex Rindone (Marmion Academy, Geneva, Ill.) broke the tape with a time of 1:33.62. The 3200 relay unit of freshmen Jonathan Smith (Moline HS, Moline, Ill.), Tommy Harris (Davenport Assumption HS, Davenport, Iowa), Kyle McNicholas (Carl Sandburg HS, Orland Park, Ill.) and Brian Pollastrini (York HS, Elmhurst, Ill.) won with a time of 8:38.70.
Sophomore Jimmy Zars (York HS, Elmhurst, Ill.) won the high jump with a leap of 6’ 1 ½” and freshman Chad Collins (Thornridge HS, Dolton, Ill.) took the long jump with a mark of 19’ 10 ½”.
Rindone was second in the 55 in :06.65 while O’Rourke was third in the 200 with a time of :23.86. Sophomore Greg Davis (Carlinville HS, Carlinville, Ill.) placed third in the 300 in :37.26 and was second in the 55 hurdles in :08.12. The 500 had junior Jason Langslet (Mundelein HS, Mundelein, Ill.) place second in 1:08.82 and freshman Ryan Brummet (Riverdale HS, Port Byron, Ill.) take third in 1:10.55. Freshman Steve Rogers (Crystal Lake South HS, Crystal Lake, Ill.) was second in the 800 (1:59.95) and junior Jarrett Kessel (Amboy HS, Sublette, Ill.) was third (2:05.08). Junior Ryan Miller (Crystal Lake Central HS, Crystal Lake, Ill.) placed third in the mile with a time of 4:37.52.
The Vikings swept the 3000 as sophomore Billy Wisser (Hersey HS, Mount Prospect, Ill.) was second and junior Matt Bowman (Geneva HS, Geneva, Ill.) placed third behind Bailey’s winning time of 8:40.99. Wisser ran 8:50.68 and Bowman was clocked in 8:54.44. junior Brendan Bradley (Mundelein HS, Mundelein, Ill.) was third in the 55 hurdles in :08.24.
The 1600 relay team of King, Patton, Langslet and Brummet finished second in 3:30.73. Junior Eric Chalus (Rochelle HS, Rochelle, Ill.) placed second in the pole vault with a clearance of 15’ 1” and junior Alex Stake (Williamsville HS, Sherman, Ill.) took third at 14’ 7 ¼”. Becker placed second in the long jump with a mark of 19’ 10 ¼”.
Augustana will compete in two meets next week, traveling to Iowa City, Iowa on Friday, February 19 to face the University of Iowa and then heading to Dubuque, Iowa on Saturday, February 20 for the University of Dubuque Open.
