2010 Season - Softball picked for third in CCIW

The Augustana Vikings have been picked for third place in the 2010 preseason College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin softball poll, it was announced today. Veteran head coach Kris Kistler's team garnered 39 points in the poll after finishing the 2009 season with a 28-14 overall record and 9-5 mark in the CCIW, good for third place.

Defending champion Illinois Wesleyan (37-6 and 14-0) is the preseason favorite to repeat its championship. The Titans collected 46 points and four first place votes. North Central (27-12 and 10-4) placed second with 44 points and three first place votes, followed by Augustana in third with 39 points and one first place vote. Carthage (25-12 and 7-7) grabbed the fourth spot with 31 points. Wheaton (18-21 and 5-9) was fifth with 20 points. Elmhurst (14-22 and 2-12) and Millikin (16-24 and 5-9) tied for sixth with 16 points and North Park (12-18 and 4-10) was eighth with 12 points.

Augustana will open the 2010 season on February 27 with a game against Oneonta State in Clermont, Florida.

Voting in the preseason poll is done by the softball coaches in the CCIW. Each coach votes for the seven other schools in the conference in order of predicted finish. Points are assigned in reverse order of voting (seven points for first, six for second, etc.). Coaches may not vote for their own team.
