2009-2010 Season - Third ranked Vikings place fifth at Warhawk

The action was furious at the Warhawk Invitational on Friday, February 5 in Whitewater, Wisconsin. Augustana, ranked third in the latest NCAA Division III national indoor men’s track & field poll, placed fifth in the eight team meet with 70 points. This was a star-studded field that featured the top three ranked teams in the country.

Wisconsin-Oshkosh, ranked first, easily won the event with 170 points while North Central, the second rated team, placed second with 134. Host Wisconsin-Whitewater was third (129) and Chicago (89) took fourth. Behind Augustana, NCAA Division II school Wisconsin-Parkside was sixth (13) while Wisconsin-Stevens Point (10) finished seventh and Loras (3) took eighth.

The Vikings of veteran head coach Paul Olsen did not win a single event but did record a pair of second place performances. Freshman Alex Rindone (Marmion Academy, Geneva, Ill.) was second in the 200 in :22.58 and freshman Greg Patton (Bloomington HS, Bloomington, Ill.) was the runner-up in the 400 in :50.05. Rindone also took sixth in the 55 in :06.65.

Sophomore Pat Zeunik (Bloomington Central Catholic HS, Bloomington, Ill.) finished third in the triple jump with a leap of 46’ 1 ½”. Sophomore Greg Davis (Carlinville HS, Carlinville, Ill.) placed fourth in the 55 hurdles in :07.98, the second week in a row that he has broken the :08.00 barrier while junior teammate Brendan Bradley (Mundelein HS, Mundelein, Ill.) was right behind him in fifth place with a time of :08.14. Both the 1600 (3:25.34) and distance medley (10:55.11) relay teams finished in fourth place. Senior Max Petersen (Mundelein HS, Mundelein, Ill.) took fourth in the 55 in :06.60.

Senior Dan Bailey (Deerfield HS, Deerfield, Ill.) ran 14:58.89 in the 5000 and took fifth while junior Eric Chalus (Rochelle HS, Rochelle, Ill.) cleared 15’ 1” in the pole vault to place fifth. Junior Brad Keating (Cary-Grove HS, Cary, Ill.) took sixth in the mile in 4:22.57 and junior Jason Langslet (Mundelein HS, Mundelein, Ill.) was sixth in the 800 in 1:57.01. Senior Nathan Maass (Naperville Central HS, Naperville, Ill.) finished sixth in the triple jump with a leap of 43’ 9 ¼”.

Sophomore Brian Benning (Winnebago HS, Winnebago, Ill.) placed seventh in the weight toss (53’ 10 ¼”) and eighth in the shot put (46’ 2”) while sophomore Phil Christensen (Kaneland HS, Elburn, Ill.) was eighth in the weight throw with a heave of 53’ 2 ¾”.

Augustana will host the Augustana Invitational next Saturday, February 13, in the PepsiCo Center.
