2009-2010 Season - Wrestlers compete at Pete Willson Invite
The Augustana Vikings ran into some tough competition at the Pete Willson Invitational on Saturday, January 30 in Wheaton, Illinois. Third year head coach Eric Juergens’ team scored 14.5 points and placed 25th out of 30 teams.
The Vikings were unable to produce a place winner at the event. However, seniors George Gogonas (Bowie HS, Austin, Texas) and Zac Holland (West Des Moines Dowling HS, Pleasant Hill, Iowa) and freshman Tyler Dempsey (Grant HS, Ingleside, Ill.) all won a pair of matches.
Gogonas won his first two bouts at 125 pounds, defeating Cody Stewart of Mount St. Joseph 9-2 in the first round before pinning Danny Lethbridge of Messiah at 2:18 in the second round. Gogonas then lost to number one seed Cody Zimmerman of Wisconsin-Parkside 4-0 in the quarterfinals. He dropped a 13-6 decision to Will Bentley of Elizabethtown in the consolation round and was eliminated from the tournament.
At 157 pounds Holland fell to Ben Chapman of Lakeland 5-0 in the opening round. Holland slipped into the consolations and pinned Jim Layton of Chicago at 4:48 and beat Tim Gingerich of North Central 14-2. His tournament run stopped in his next match, however, when he fell to fourth seeded Kyle Long of Trine 17-4.
Dempsey drew eighth seeded John Piechuta of Mt. Union in the first round at 165 and lost an 8-4 decision. He recorded a technical fall (20-4 @ 5:15) over Paul Harvey of Wheaton in the first round of the consolation bracket and then advanced with a default over Jim Neal of Olivet. He lost to Joby Bodi of North Central 9-2.
Augustana will wrestle Simpson and Central of Iowa on Tuesday, February 2 in Pella, Iowa to finish the regular season. The College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin tournament will be February 11 in Naperville, Illinois.
