2009-2010 Season - Vikings drop home game to Elmhurst

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – The Augustana women’s basketball team dropped a home game to Elmhurst on Saturday, January 30 in Rock Island, Illinois.  The Vikings fell 71-46 and are now 6-13 overall and 1-7 in the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin.

Sophomore Natalie Runge (St. Dominic HS, O’Fallon, Mo.) scored the first basket of the game to give Augustana an early 2-0 lead, but the Bluejays quickly tied the score and gradually pulled out to an 11 point lead at 19-8 with 11:30 left in the first half.

A bucket by freshman Kelsey Mikula (Coal City HS, Coal City, Ill.) quickly brought the Blue & Gold back within single digits.  Augustana later closed the gap to 23-18 at the 5:12 mark, but trailed 31-23 at intermission.  Lyndsie Long tallied the final bucket of the half for the Bluejays, finishing the opening stanza with 20 points.

The visitors regained a double digit lead on a pair of free throws from Megan Ney; keying a 16-4 spurt in the first nine minutes of the second half to blow open the contest.  Senior Kristen Fox (Ottawa HS, Ottawa, Ill.) connected on a jumper to cut the deficit to 47-29, but Augustana would get no closer the rest of the way as the Bluejays coasted to the road victory.

Runge was the lone Viking in double figures with 10 points.  She also added five rebounds and three steals.  Fox contributed nine points, but no other Augustana player had more than four points.

Long led the Bluejays with 24 points and six rebounds.  Ney was also in double figures with 11 points.
