2009 Season - Oakes and Holtrop pull down MVP honors
Senior Katie Oakes (Wheaton North HS, Wheaton, Ill.) was voted Offensive MVP and sophomore Mary Pat Holtrop (St. Charles North HS, St. Charles, Ill.) was voted Defensive MVP of the Augustana women’s soccer team this year. The team had an outstanding year, finishing with a 20-2-1 record after advancing to the “Sweet 16” in the NCAA Division III tournament for the first time in school history. The Vikings had a perfect 7-0 record in College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin play in winning their first overall championship ever. The Vikings also won the CCIW tournament title with a 1-0 win over Illinois Wesleyan.
Oakes was one of the leading scorers for the Vikings, scoring nine goals and assisting on four others for a total of 22 points. She was one of six Vikings in double figures as the team outscored its opponents 63-12 on the year. Oakes also won this award as a freshman in 2006, and has had an outstanding career here. She is in the top ten for career goals scored with 33, assists with 19, and total points with 85 points. Oakes was an all-conference performer all four years at Augustana and she was a second team all-region selection this past year.
Holtrop played in the left back position on defense and was an integral part of a group that allowed just 12 goals in 23 matches this past year. The Vikings posted 14 shutouts and posted a goals-against-average of 0.50.
The most improved player award went to freshman goalkeeper Bridget McDermott (Prospect HS, Mt. Prospect, Ill.) . McDermott saw action in four matches and logged 174 minutes and recorded six saves and was 1-0 with one shutout.
Senior Lauren Polock (Wheaton North HS, Wheaton, Ill.) was the recipient of the Iron Viking Award. Polock holds the Augustana school record for career assists with 33. She also finished her career with 65 total points (16 goals and 33 assists) and that places her fifth on that all-time list. She was first team all-conference and all-region this past season. Polock had four goals and 10 assists in 2009.
