2009-2010 Season - Vikings defeat Wheaton and Concordia
Continuing to show remarkable improvement as the season progresses, Augustana pulled down a pair of wrestling victories on Friday, January 22 at the Wheaton Duals in Wheaton, Illinois. Eric Juergens team defeated Wheaton 43-4 and Concordia 29-9, winning 17 of the 20 matches contested during the evening. With the two wins, the Vikings moved their overall record to 4-9 on the season and they have won four of their last seven after starting the season 0-6.
AUGUSTANA 43, WHEATON 4
Augustana won nine of the 10 weight classes, losing only at 184 pounds. Freshman Ian Knepshield (Shady Side Academy, Ford City, Penn.) picked up the only pin in the match when he stopped Paul Harvey at 1:46 of the 165 pound bout. George Gogonas (Bowie HS, Austin, Texas) at 125, Hunter Feraco (Gull Lake HS, Battle Creek, Mich.) at 197 and George Papandreou (Waukegan HS, Waukegan, Ill.) all won by forfeit.
Steve Poffenberger (Allegan HS, Paw Paw, Mich.) followed Gogonas’ forfeit victory at 125 with a 7-4 win over Caleb Cardenas at 133. Alberto Quiros (Morton HS, Berwyn, Ill.) then picked up a 15-4 major decision over Casey Krahn at 141. Alec Rizzo (Fremd HS, Palatine, Ill.) and Zac Holland (West Des Moines Dowling HS, Pleasant Hill, Iowa) followed with back-to-back 2-0 victories. Rizzo beat Jonathan Sbraccia and Holland defeated Matthew Cordell.
After Holland’s victory, Knepshield came up with his pin and then Alex Vavra (Gull Lake HS, Dowling, Mich.) won by medical forfeit of Justin Tomal at 174. After Wheaton won at 184 pounds, the match closed with the forfeit victories by Feraco and Papandreou.

AUGUSTANA 29, CONCORDIA 9
The Vikings won close decisions in the lowest three weight classes en route to a 29-9 win over Concordia to move their record to 4-9 on the season. Augustana won eight of the 10 weight classes and seven of those eight victories were decided by three points or less. The only weight class that was not close was at 157 pounds where Zac Holland (West Des Moines Dowling HS, Pleasant Hill, Iowa) picked up a technical fall at 5:19 of his match against Chris Hamberger.
George Gogonas (Bowie HS, Austin, Texas) started things off with a 9-6 win over Marcus Lubner at 125 pounds and Steve Poffenberger (Allegan HS, Paw Paw, Mich.) followed with a 9-6 win over Curt Kemnitz at 133. Alberto Quiros (Morton HS, Berwyn, Ill.) won a 7-5 overtime decision against David Tuomi at 141.
Concordia recorded a pin at 149 but Holland got the Vikings back on the winning track with his technical fall over Hamberger. Concordia won at 165 but Alex Vavra (Gull Lake HS, Dowling, Mich.) squeaked out a 4-5 victory against Aaron Bergen at 174. Matt Nykaza (Brother Rice HS, Oak Lawn, Ill.) beat Josh Nord at 184 by a score of 6-2. Hunter Feraco (Gull Lake HS, Battle Creek, Mich.) picked up his second forfeit of the evening at 197 and Pat Kilroy (Lisle HS, Lisle, Ill.) ended the match by beating Travis Page 1-0 at 285.
