2009-2010 Season - Vens wins 100 backstroke at Grinnell Invite
GRINNELL, Iowa – Senior Ramsey Vens (Pleasant Valley HS, Bettendorf, Iowa) continued to swim well in the 100 backstroke, winning the event at the Grinnell Invitational with a time of 1:01.90 and leading the Augustana swimming team to a fifth place finish at the 10 team event on Friday, January 15 and Saturday, January 16 in Grinnell, Iowa.
The Vikings finished with 235.5 points, just a single point behind Macalester (236.5). Luther won the meet with 575.5 points. Grinnell took second with 460 points and Knox was third at 248. The Blue & Gold outdistanced Coe (136), Nebraska-Kearney (133.5), Morningside (123), Iowa Central Community College (71), and Simpson (50).
Vens added to her win in the 100 backstroke with a third place finish in the 200 backstroke (2:18.93) and a sixth place performance in the 200 freestyle (2:07.89). She also swam on four of the five top relay teams for Augustana. Vens anchored the 800 freestyle team to a fourth place finish in a time of 8:28.41. She was joined by senior Sara Hlavin (St. Viator HS, Elk Grove Village, Ill.), freshman Molly Clennon (Benet Academy, Naperville, Ill.), and junior Emily Cox (Pioneer HS, Ann Arbor, Mich.). Vens also swam the last leg of the 400 freestyle relay, combining with freshman Alexandra Piper (Coal City HS, Coal City, Ill.), Clennon, and sophomore Alissa Giedd (Freeport HS, Cedarville, Ill.) for a time of 3:55.37.
Vens also led off a pair of fifth place relay teams. She swam with Hlavin, freshman Emma Regnier (Grayslake North HS, Lake Villa, Ill.), and Clennon in the 400 medley relay (4:25.74). Vens and Regnier also paired together in the 200 medley relay with freshman Emily Timmons (West Aurora HS, North Aurora, Ill.) and Piper to finish in 1:59.74.
Giedd, Regnier, freshman Mary Naughton (Fremont HS, Fremont, Neb.), and Piper took fourth in the 200 freestyle relay with a clocking of 1:48.95. Regnier also came through with a third place finish in the 100 butterfly (1:05.11). Cox was sixth in the 500 freestyle (5:37.24) and Walter placed sixth in the one meter dive (291.25).
