2009-2010 Season - Vikings best field of nine at Sol Butler Classic

DUBUQUE, Iowa – Senior Hannah Hottle (Monmouth-Roseville HS, Monmouth, Ill.) got an individual win in the 1000 meters in addition to competing on Augustana’s winning 4x400 relay team as the Vikings took first place Saturday at the Sol Butler Classic in Dubuque, Iowa. Augustana scored 124 points to edge out Wiscoinsin-Platteville who finished second among a nine-team field with 122.

Hottle’s 3:10.94 in the 1000 was the Vikings’ lone individual win and she teamed with Allison Schaley (Cary-Grove HS, Cary, Ill.), Amy Walsh (Cary-Grove HS, Cary, Ill.) and Sarahbeth Jones (Warren Township HS, Wadsworth, Ill.) to take the 4x400 in a time of 4:10.64.

Other top finishers for the Vikings included Annie Heifner’s (Oregon HS, Oregon, Wis.) second-place 2:33.18 in the 800 as well as a second-place 10’6” by Caitlin Quinn (Metamora HS, Metamora, Ill.) in the pole vault.

Theresa Coverick (Stagg HS, Palos Park, Ill.) finished third behind Heifner at 800 meters in a time of 2:36.36 while teammates Dana Wleklinski (Palatine HS, Palatine, Ill.) and Emily Byars (Geneva HS, Geneva, Ill.) ran 2:54.48 and 3:05.44 to finish sixth and seventh, respectively.

Augustana swept the third fourth and fifth spots in the mile with Tara Bistry (Joliet Catholic HS, Shorewood), Sarah Johnson (Grayslake North HS, Lake Villa, Ill.) and Hannah Schneider (Downers Grove North HS, Downers Grove, Ill.) running 5:49.43, 5:59.23 and 6:18.19 respectively.

In the 400, the Walsh took third place in a time of 1:03.44 while Kristillyn Pohlman (Zion-Benton HS, Winthrop Harbor, Ill.) was sixth with a 1:06.77 and Page Deike (Leroy HS, Leroy, Ill.) ran a 1:10.94, good for eighth place. Pohlman also took eighth at 1000 meters with a time of 3:35.11. Bistry and Johnson were fourth and fifth at 3000 meters with times of 11:17.24 and 11:50.24.

Ainsley Fedler (Burlington HS, Burlington, Iowa) took fifth at 55 meters with a time of :07.67 and seventh in the 200 with a :28.25 clocking. Jones’ 1:43.56 in the 600 was good for fifth place.

In the field events, in addition to Quinn, Taylor Tjardes (Gibson City/Melvin-Sibley HS, Gibson City, Ill.) took fifth in the pole vault with a leap of 8’ 6¼”. Ceara Campos (Sterling HS, Sterling, Ill.) was sixth in the triple jump with a 31’ 2¾” mark. Melanie Battistoni (York HS, Elmhurst, Ill.) was seventh in the weight throw with a 34’ 9¾” toss and eighth in the shot at 31’ 1¾”. Amber Gruber (Rolling Meadows HS, Arlington Heights, Ill.) took eighth in the weight throw with a 34’ 7”.

Viking relay teams took third in the distance medley and fourth in the 4x200. The distance medley team was comprised of Heifner, Jennifer Prazak (Naperville North HS, Naperville, Ill) and Brittany Prazak (Naperville North HS, Naperville, Ill.) as well as Coverick. They ran a 13:34.89. Catherine Foreman (St. Joseph-Ogden HS, St. Joseph, Ill.), Valerie Beach (Palatine HS, Palatine, Ill.), Brittney Bennett (Annawan HS, Annawan, Ill.) and Schaley combined to run a 1:52.85 in the 800 relay.

The Vikings will be competing in Monmouth College’s Midwest Invite on Saturday, January 23. The meet is scheduled to start at 11:00 a.m.
