Laura Hartman has signed a contract with Oxford University Press for her dissertation-book titled How Christians Should Consume: Resources for an Ethics of Consumption.

Consumerism - consumption that is excessive in some way, and perhaps idolatrous - is a problem. And the excesses of affluent consumers pose a serious threat to the environment. The problems are clear, and dire. But what is the solution? How do we know what good, proper consumption looks like? Is there a Christian vision of ethical consumption? This book answers this question by collecting, ordering, and analyzing relevant resources from the Christian tradition, from Francis of Assisi to Dorothy Day; from John Woolman to Creflo Dollar; from Sergei Bulgakov to Seventh-day Adventists. While many Christian sources counsel asceticism and consuming less, others encourage grateful savoring and consuming more; still others judge consumption by its impact on relationships, or by how well it coheres to a vision of the world as it ought to be. Taken together, these resources create a complex but insightful guide for thoughtful, discerning Christian consumption.
