2009-2010 Season - Vikings drop road game 77-58 at Buena Vista

STORM LAKE, IOWA – The Augustana women’s basketball team opened 2010 with a long road trip to Storm Lake, Iowa and fell 77-58 to Buena Vista on Saturday, January 2.  The Vikings drop to 5-6 overall this season heading into College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin action.

The Beavers did not offer a warm welcome, racing out to a 15-2 advantage before the game was four minutes old.  Sophomore Lani Kasten (German Valley HS, Forreston, Ill.) stopped the run with a jumper, and junior Dawn Kernich (Mt. Olive HS, Mt. Olive, Ill.) then went on a 7-0 scoring spree of her own as the Vikings climbed to within 15-11 at the 14:00 minute mark.  Kernich nailed a jump shot before converting a pair of lay-ups.  She added a made free throw to complete the three point play on her final bucket.

A three point field goal from freshman Kelsey Mikula (Coal City HS, Coal City, Ill.) trimmed the Buena Vista lead to 17-16 with 12:18 remaining in the first half, but the home team controlled the rest of the opening stanza, grabbing a 43-21 advantage heading into intermission.  Buena Vista capitalized on Viking miscues, scoring 25 points off turnovers.

The Vikings heated up in the second half, connecting on 14-18 (77.8 percent) field goals, but were unable to put much of a dent in the Buena Vista lead.  A three point basket from sophomore Abbi Staples (Sterling HS, Sterling, Ill.) cut the deficit to 57-39 with 12:12 to play, but that was as close as the Blue & Gold would come the rest of the afternoon.  Augustana also controlled the ball much better in the second half, only allowing seven points off turnovers.

Kasten led a balanced scoring attack with 13 points and finished with a double-double after snaring a game-high 12 rebounds.  Freshman Dori Gills (Holy Family HS, Boulder, Colo.) and Kernich were also in double figures with 12 and 11 points respectively.  Staples added eight points off the bench.

Buena Vista was led by 23 points from Margo Muhlbauer.  The Beavers also received 11 points from Brittany Gunn and 10 points from Jocelyn Kock.

Augustana opens CCIW action with a home game against North Park on Wednesday, January 6 at 5:00 p.m.
