2009 Season - Lee, Westemeyer, Rosset, Meyer earn MVP honors
Three seniors and a sophomore took home Most Valuable Player honors for the 2009 Augustana football team at the Vikings’ annual awards banquet. The seniors were defensive back Aaron Setchell (Amboy HS, Amboy, Ill.), offensive tackle Blaine Westemeyer (Blue Valley Northwest HS, Overland Park, Ill.) and Andrew Rosset (Maine West HS, Des Plaines, Ill.) while the sophomore was David Lee (Springfield HS, Springfield, Ill.).
Setchell was the Most Valuable Defensive Player after he led the team in tackles with 72 (43 solo and 29 assists). He had five tackles for loss with one quarterback sack. He also had two pass interceptions, three deflections, two fumble recoveries and one forced fumble. He was a first team all-conference selection in the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin and twice during the year he was selected as the CCIW’s “Player of the Week”.
Westemeyer and Lee shared the Most Valuable Offensive Player award. Lee had a banner year after he won the starting quarterback position prior to the second game of the season. He finished the campaign with 1,714 yards passing on 152 completions in 237 attempts with 10 touchdowns and eight interceptions. He also was the second leading rusher on the team with 310 yards on 93 attempts and six touchdowns. Lee was twice named CCIW “Player of the Week” and he established two single game school records. He completed 28 passes in a loss to North Central on November 7 to break the old mark of 25 set by Ken Anderson, a former NFL MVP with the Cincinnati Bengals, against Carroll on October 10, 1970. Lee also passed for 422 yards in a win over Millikin on November 14. That took down Anderson’s previous record of 410 yards set against North Park on November 2, 1968.
Westemeyer was named the winner of the Gagliardi Trophy, which went to the “Player of the Year” in NCAA Division III. The Gagliardi Trophy combined athletic prowess, academic excellence and community involvement. He was one of just 16 (only two were from NCAA Division III) William V. Campbell post-graduate scholarship winners by the National Football Foundation. He was a consensus NCAA Division III All-American and was named to the all-conference team for the third straight year. He was also the winner of the Jack Swartz Award in the CCIW and was a CoSIDA Academic All-American for the second straight year.
Rosset was the Special Teams Player of the Year for the second consecutive year. He was the third leading tackler on the team with 58 (37 solo and 21 assists). He had 10 tackles for loss, three quarterback sacks, four interceptions, two blocked kicks and one fumble recovery.
Senior Eric Meyer (Loves Park Harlem HS, Machesney Park, Ill.) was the winner of the Jerry Freck Most Inspirational Award. Meyer, was fourth on the team in tackles with 55 (29 solo & 26 assists) with one tackle for loss and one interception. The Freck Award is named for the late Jerry Freck, who was the Augustana team manager in the late 1970’s and it symbolizes the intangible concept of being a team player and contributing wherever possible to the success of the Vikings.
Junior Jack Madden (St. Viator HS, Barrington, Ill.) was the Defensive Scout Player of the Year and junior John Porter (Mahomet-Seymour HS, Mahomet, Ill.) won the Offensive Scout Player of the Year award.
Augustana finished the 2009 season with a 6-4 regular season and a 4-3 mark in the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin, which was good for third place in the league.
