2009-10 Season - Third ranked Warhawks beat 18th rated Vikings
Third ranked Wisconsin-Whitewater broke away late in the game and defeated 18th ranked Augustana 77-66 in non-conference men’s basketball game. This non-conference game that featured a pair of teams ranked in the top 20 of the D3hoops.com poll was tight throughout and the Warhawks used a 14-6 run over the final 3:35 to put make the final score much more comfortable than the game was.
With just 3:35 left Kyle Nelson (Deerfield HS, Deerfield, Ill.) scored to pull Augustana to trim the Wisconsin-Whitewater lead to 63-60. However, Dustin Mitchell scored for the Warhawks to make it 65-60 at 3:09 and then Phil Negri buried a pair of free throws at 2:31 to make it a seven point advantage (67-60) at 2;28. Although the Vikings cut it to five points (67-62) at 1:52 on a basket by Kameron Norton (Downers Grove North HS, Downers Grove, Ill.), UW-Whitewater went on an 8-1 run to make it 75-63 with just :22 left and put the game out of reach.
Nelson led the Vikings in scoring with 17 points and 11 rebounds. He was good on eight of 16 from the field and he also had an assist. Senior Matt Pelton (Bloomington Central Catholic HS, Bloomington, Ill. – now resides in Houston, Texas) was also in double figures with 12 points.
Augustana didn’t shoot it very well in the first half, hitting just .382 (13 of 34) from the floor before hitting .484 (15-31) in the second half. The Vikings hit on just two of 15 three point field goal attempts (.133).
Dupree Fletcher came off the bench to lead the Warhawks with 21 points, which included a 10 of 10 performance at the free throw line. Dustin Mitchell had 18 points and Negri scored 15.
The Vikings are now 7-3 overall while UW-Whitewater moved to 11-0 on the season.
