2009-10 Season - 3-point outburst keys win over Monmouth

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. -- Augustana got six first half three-pointers from Chris Anderson (West Carroll HS, Mt. Carroll, Ill.) and spent a good part of the second half at the free throw line to claim a 87-68 win over Monmouth at Carver Center Sunday. The win moves the 18th-ranked Vikings to 7-2 on the year heading into a Tuesday showdown at undefeated and 3rd-ranked Wisconsin-Whitewater.

Matt Pelton (Bloomington, Ill. Central Catholic HS, Houston, Texas) got the Vikings started off on the right foot, scoring 12 of the team’s first 19 points in the game’s first 6-and-a-half-minutes. His old-fashioned three-point play with 13:28 left in the first half gave Augustana its first double-digit lead at 19-8.

The Scots whittled the lead down to one with 4:17 left before Anderson went on a tear, draining five of six three-point attempts in the last 4:02 of the half. The fifth of those, his sixth of the half, came at the halftime buzzer and put the Vikings up 47-36. Anderson’s 18 points at the half led the Vikings, just ahead of Pelton’s 15.

Both Anderson and Pelton cooled off in the second half, but Kyle Nelson (Deerfield HS, Deerfield, Ill.) picked up the slack with 12 points and six rebounds in the second 20 minutes. The lead continued to grow and the final 19-point margin equaled the largest of the game.

Pelton was the game’s high scorer with 23 points with Anderson and Nelson close behind with 18 each. Nelson’s nine rebounds were a game high while Kameron Norton (Downers Grove North HS, Downers Grove, Ill.) and Troy Rorer (Bettendorf HS, Bettendorf, Iowa) snared eight and seven respectively as Augustana compiled an enormous 43-20 edge on the boards. Brian DeSimone (Buffalo Grove HS, Wheeling, Ill.) had a solid outing as well with nine points, six assists and two steals. The Vikings shot .490 from the field, including an uncharacteristic 10-of-21 (.476) from three-point range. They also went to the free throw line 41 times, converting 29 for a .707 percentage.

Augustana is in action next on Tuesday, December 22 at 10-0 Wisconsin-Whitewater. That game is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
