2009-2010 Season - Viking fall to .500 with loss at Coe

CEDAR RAPIDS, IOWA – Coe used a 17-0 run midway through the first half to coast to a 50-16 halftime lead and an eventual 79-35 win over Augustana Saturday at Eby Fieldhouse in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. The loss drops the Vikings, who had won five of their previous seven contests coming in, to 5-5 on the season while Coe improves to 4-4.

The Vikings fought back early after Coe had jumped out to a 10-2 lead. A Kristen Warnken (Centaurus HS, Erie, Colo.) three-pointer at the 14:50 mark of the first half cut the lead to 15-9. However, the Kohawks then put together a 17-0 run over the next five minutes to effectively put the game out of reach.

Coe took advantage of 16 turnovers by the Vikings and a 21-11 advantage on the boards to lead 50-16 at halftime. The Kohawks knocked down .526 from the field to just .350 for Augustana in the opening 20 minutes.

The Kohawks outscored Augustana 29-19 in the second half as the Vikings did a much better job taking care of the ball (seven turnovers) and rebounding (24 to 26 for Coe), but connected on just 4 of 26 field goal attempts (.154). Coe shot .393 from the field in the second half and .470 for the game.

Lani Kasten (Forreston HS, German Valley, Ill.) came off the Viking bench to lead the team in scoring with 12 points. Freshman Dori Gills (Holy Family HS, Boulder, Colo.) led the way with six rebounds.

The Vikings are now idle until after the new year. They’ll be back in action on January 2, 2010 when they’ll take on Buena Vista in Storm Lake, Iowa in a 3:00 p.m. contest.
