2009 Season - Chris Zook named MVP in men's cross country

Augustana senior Chris Zook (Normal Community HS, Normal, Ill.) finished his outstanding cross country career by winning the Most Valuable Runner award for the 2009 men’s cross country team. This is the second year in a row that Zook was voted MVR after being named co-MVR last year.

Zook ended his illustrious career by competing at the NCAA Division III National Meet, finishing in 62 nd place with a time of 26:29.8. Zook was tremendous all season for the Vikings of veteran head coach Paul Olsen. He qualified for the national meet by taking eighth in the very tough Midwest Regional meet in Oshkosh, Wisconsin, finishing with a time of 24:43. He was also 10th in the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin with a clocking of 27:20.

The Most Improved runner was junior Lucas Westblade (Will Carleton Academy, Hillsdale, Michigan). Jonathan Smith (Moline HS, Moline, Ill.) was voted Most Valuable freshman after a season in which he consistently in the Top Seven, including second on the team for the CCIW Conference race finishing 11 th overall, as well as second on the team in the NCAA Division III Midwest Regional Meet where he finished 34 th. The Most Inspirational award was shared by four seniors, Dan Bailey (Deerfield HS, Deerfield Ill.), Brian Hart (University City HS, St. Louis, Missouri), Jeff Miller (Dundee Crown HS, Algonquin, Ill.), and Zook. A new award was created this year, Most Improved Freshman, with Tommy Harris (Assumption HS, Davenport, Iowa), Paul Hurd (Wilton HS, Wilton, Iowa), and Kyle McNicholas (Carl Sandburg HS, Orland Park, Ill.) sharing the inaugural award.

Captains-elect for the 2010 season will be Matt Bowman (Geneva HS, Elburn, Ill.), Sean Carmody (Winnebago HS, Rockford, Ill.), and Brad Keating (Cary Grove HS, Cary, Ill). Bowman, Carmody and Keating will all be seniors next year. The captains for 2009 were Bailey, Hart and Zook.

Augustana, under the direction of veteran head coach Paul Olsen, was ranked in the top 20 of NCAA Division III throughout the 2009 season. After winning the Dan Huston Invitational in Waverly, Iowa, a season high 9 th place ranking was garnered. The Vikings also won the Western Illinois Invitational and placed second in the Brissman/Lundeen as well as the CCIW Conference meet. They were third at the Illinois Intercollegiate meet as well as the UW Oshkosh invitational and finished the year with a seventh place at the NCAA Division III Midwest Regional.
